This is seen as a bold move by Qualcomm, using its own third-generation Oryon architecture instead of relying on ARM as before.

According to the announcement, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 features two 4.6GHz cores and six high-performance 3.62GHz cores, promising a 16% increase in overall performance and a 35% reduction in energy consumption compared to the previous generation.

Qualcomm even boldly claimed that its new chip "surpasses Apple's A19 Pro"—a point that has always been debated when considering the software-hardware optimization on iPhones.

Graphics processing capabilities have also been increased by 23%, while energy consumption has decreased by 20%. The new generation Hexagon NPU boosts AI power by 37%, enabling the running of large-scale language models directly on the device.

Qualcomm emphasizes that this is a key factor in ensuring privacy. However, experts still question whether "on-site" AI experiences are truly necessary, or merely a marketing ploy.

Notably, the integrated X85 modem is advertised to reduce gaming latency by 50% thanks to AI. The first smartphones equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 are expected to launch this month or next.

However, the actual experience also depends on the network infrastructure, so it's difficult to say whether the chip alone completely solves the lag problem.

Qualcomm expands its PC market with Snapdragon X2 Elite and X2 Elite Extreme.

Not stopping at smartphones, Qualcomm also introduced the Snapdragon X2 Elite and X2 Elite Extreme for laptops, also based on the 3rd generation Oryon architecture and manufactured using a 3nm process.

The X2 Elite Extreme stands out with its 18 processing cores, including one that reaches 5GHz. Qualcomm claims that this new pair of chips is 31% faster, 43% more energy efficient, and 2.3 times more powerful in terms of graphics than last year's X Elite generation.

The numbers are impressive, but compared to current Intel Core Ultra or AMD Ryzen AI chips, experts believe further independent verification is needed.

Qualcomm claims its new chip offers 75% higher performance at the same power level compared to Intel and AMD chips. This claim immediately attracted attention, but it could also easily backfire, given Intel and AMD's established software ecosystems, drivers, and long-standing relationships with PC manufacturers – things Qualcomm still has to prove.

Laptops powered by these chips are expected to launch early next year. Users will get a real-world assessment when these models hit the market.
