This is considered a bold move by Qualcomm when using the 3rd generation Oryon architecture developed by the company itself, instead of depending on ARM as before.

According to the announcement, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 has 2 cores running at 4.6GHz and 6 high-performance cores running at 3.62GHz, promising a 16% increase in overall performance and 35% energy savings compared to the previous generation.

Qualcomm even boldly claimed that the new chip "surpasses Apple's A19 Pro" - something that has always been controversial when considering the ability to optimize software and hardware on the iPhone.

Graphics processing power is also increased by 23%, while power consumption is reduced by 20%. The new generation Hexagon NPU increases AI power by 37%, allowing large language models to run directly on the device.

Qualcomm emphasizes this as a key factor to ensure privacy. However, experts still question: is the “on-site” AI experience really necessary, or is it just a marketing race?

Notably, the integrated X85 modem is advertised to reduce gaming latency by 50% thanks to AI. The first smartphones equipped with Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 are expected to launch this month or next.

However, the actual experience also depends on the network infrastructure, so it is difficult to confirm that the chip alone has completely solved the lag problem.

Qualcomm Expands PC Market with Snapdragon X2 Elite and X2 Elite Extreme

Not stopping at smartphones, Qualcomm introduced the Snapdragon X2 Elite and X2 Elite Extreme for laptops, also based on the 3rd generation Oryon architecture, manufactured on the 3nm process.

The X2 Elite Extreme is notable for its 18 processing cores, including one that reaches 5GHz. Qualcomm claims the new chip duo is 31% faster, 43% more energy efficient, and 2.3 times more powerful in graphics than last year's X Elite generation.

The numbers are impressive, but compared to current Intel Core Ultra or AMD Ryzen AI chip lines, experts say more independent verification is needed.

Qualcomm claims its new chip delivers 75% more performance at the same power level than Intel and AMD chips. This claim is immediately interesting, but also likely to backfire, given Intel and AMD’s ecosystems of software, drivers, and longstanding relationships with PC makers—something Qualcomm still has to prove.

Laptops running these chips are expected to be released early next year. Users will be able to evaluate them in real life when they hit the market.
