After establishing its position in the affordable Android smartphone chip market, MediaTek is now targeting the mid-range segment with the introduction of the Dimensity 8400 chip – considered one of MediaTek's most impressive mid-range chips in a long time.
The Dimensity 8400 will help MediaTek conquer the mid-range smartphone segment.
The highlight of the Dimensity 8400 is its completely new processing architecture, featuring eight Cortex-A725 cores operating at a maximum clock speed of 3.25 GHz and completely eliminating the small CPU core. This is a new trend we usually see in high-end Android chips, but it's the first time it's appeared in a mid-range chip. Combined with a larger cache, this design delivers a 32% increase in multi-core performance compared to the Dimensity 8300, while reducing maximum power consumption by up to 44%.
MediaTek brings impressive improvements to the Dimensity 8400.
In terms of graphics, the Dimensity 8400 features an Arm Mali-G720 MC7 GPU, promising a 24% performance increase over the previous Mali-G615 MC6 chip, along with a 42% improvement in energy efficiency. This chip also supports MediaTek's Frame Rate Converter technology to enhance the visual experience.
Regarding artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, MediaTek states that the integrated 880 NPU supports "mainstream" AI models to perform tasks such as rewriting, content creation, and intelligent responses. The Dimensity 8400 also supports the Dimensity Agentic Engine, enabling the development of AI applications with an overall performance increase of 18%.
Additionally, the Dimensity 8400 boasts other notable features such as a 12% reduction in power consumption when shooting 4K HDR video , a 5G-Advanced modem with a maximum download speed of 5.17 Gbps, and support for WQHD+ resolution at 144 Hz.
MediaTek says the first devices using the Dimensity 8400 will launch before the end of 2024, however, information on whether they will be sold globally has not yet been released. With both the POCO X6 Pro and Xiaomi 14T using the Dimensity 8300 chip, it would not be surprising if these Chinese brands adopt the Dimensity 8400 in their upcoming products.
Although the Dimensity 8400 doesn't feature Cortex-X cores, which might mean its single-core CPU performance isn't on par with some recent top-tier chips, the move to replace smaller cores with mid-range cores suggests MediaTek is aiming to deliver multi-core performance that rivals current high-end chips.
