According to a social media post from the U.S. Central Command, the attacks ordered by President Donald Trump began at 5 p.m. (Eastern Time) and were “in response to the downing of a U.S. Army Apache helicopter yesterday.” The announcement described the airstrikes as “self-defense attacks.” The extent and intensity of the U.S. attacks remain unclear.
In a statement on social media, the U.S. Central Command described the airstrike as "a proportionate response to Iran's unwarranted aggression."
Meanwhile, Iranian media reported on the morning of June 10th that explosions had been heard in the south of the country as the US launched its attacks. Iran's semi-official Mehr news agency quoted local residents as saying they heard "several explosions in the area" in the coastal city of Sirik.
"The exact nature of these sounds remains undetermined, and so far, no official military or law enforcement agency has commented on the cause of the explosions," Mehr news agency reported.
According to Mehr, the explosions could be heard in Bandar Abbas and Qeshm, two cities bordering the Strait of Hormuz.
Earlier that day, US President Donald Trump accused Iran of shooting down a US military helicopter while it was patrolling the Strait of Hormuz. Trump also stated that Washington would respond to the incident.
