Tourists check in at the Ho Dynasty Citadel World Heritage Site (Tay Do commune).
On weekends, the atmosphere along the S-shaped road in Don village ( Pu Luong commune) is always lively and bustling with tourists coming to visit and take photos. Meeting Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Anh (from Hanoi), who was busy taking photos with her friends here, she shared: “I had seen many pictures of the S-shaped road and tourist destinations in Pu Luong through photos taken by friends and posted on social media. That's why this summer I decided to come to Pu Luong for a trip to explore and experience it. Here, I was truly impressed with the S-shaped road winding between the hills and terraced rice fields, with traditional stilt houses of ethnic minorities hidden in the distance... creating a stunning backdrop for photos. Therefore, it's not just me; many tourists who come to Pu Luong also visit the S-shaped road to take beautiful photos and post them on social media to promote and spread the word to friends and other tourists.”
Besides the S-shaped road, Pu Luong also boasts many other stunning "Instagrammable spots," ranging from winding terraced rice fields to villages that retain the pristine charm of the local people, or modern, luxurious resorts. Mr. Ha Huy Giap, a homestay owner in Don village, said: "With the increasing spread of social media, the demand for 'check-in' photos among tourists is becoming more common. Whether young, middle-aged, or of any age, everyone wants unique and memorable photos from their trips to post on social media for friends and family to see. Therefore, during the homestay process, we pay special attention to building and arranging additional photo-worthy scenes for tourists, such as planting flowers and greenery that harmonize with the mountain and forest scenery, or designing tours involving rafting, visiting fields, and experiencing local culture and cuisine . This allows tourists to have fun, explore, and take photos of beautiful scenery. And these photos, when posted on social media, become the fastest and most effective way to promote tourism to friends and other visitors."
At the Ho Dynasty Citadel World Cultural Heritage site (Tay Do commune), several check-in points have been built to serve tourists, such as: "Outdoor artifact exhibition space", "Model of cannons and reforms of the Ho Dynasty", "Exhibition space of Ho Dynasty Citadel, history, legends and archaeology", "Exhibition space of citadel building stones" at the South Gate... aiming to create appeal and attract tourists to visit and experience. Mr. Trinh Huu Anh, Deputy Director of the Management Board of Ho Dynasty Citadel and Key Historical Sites of the province, said: "In the digital age, tourists' travel needs are not only about exploration and experience, but the trend of checking in has become a familiar part of every journey to a new land. The photos shared are not simply about preserving moments, but also contribute to telling the story of the trip, the emotions, and the unique impressions of each destination. Understanding this trend, Ho Dynasty Citadel has invested in and arranged more check-in points and experiential spaces with unique characteristics to increase its attractiveness and attract more and more tourists."
In reality, in today's technological boom, simply accessing social media platforms like Zalo and Facebook reveals a plethora of images of tourist destinations, including photos of friends and tourists posting and sharing them online. This demonstrates the rising trend of experiential tourism and its widespread impact. Therefore, to build a strong image and disseminate information to tourists, and enhance competitiveness, many tourist areas and destinations are proactively changing and innovating by investing in building check-in points for tourists and boosting promotion on social media.
However, according to tourism experts, while beautiful check-in spots can create a positive first impression and attract tourists, what truly makes visitors want to return and stay longer is the quality of service, friendliness, and unique experiences specific to each region. Therefore, only with systematic investment and a synchronized combination of check-in scenery, service elements, and tourism products will a destination attract a large number of tourists, and its image will be increasingly disseminated and promoted.
