On June 30, the Lithuanian Parliament approved Mindaugas Sinkevicius, chairman of the Social Democratic Party, as the country's new Prime Minister.
This move comes after the government of Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene announced its collective resignation on June 23.
According to Lithuanian regulations, the party with the most seats in Parliament nominates a candidate for Prime Minister. Based on a proposal from the Social Democratic Party, President Gitanas Nauseda submitted Sinkevicius to Parliament for approval on June 25th.
By law, the new Prime Minister has 15 days to submit the cabinet list and the government 's action plan to the National Assembly for review and approval.
Mr. Sinkevicius said that six to seven new ministers are expected to be appointed, while Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys is likely to continue in his current position.
