AP reported that federal officials announced on April 16 that Todd Lyons, Acting Director of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and a key figure in implementing President Donald Trump's mass deportation program, will leave office at the end of May 2026.
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin announced Lyons' departure, calling him an outstanding ICE leader who contributed to making communities across America safer. Secretary Mullin said Lyons' last day in office would be May 31.
"We wish him good luck with his new opportunity in the private sector," Mullin said in a statement. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has not responded to AP's inquiry about the reason for Lyons' resignation.

Lyons, appointed Acting Director of ICE in March 2025, has led the agency at the heart of President Donald Trump's immigration policy restructuring plan.
Stephen Miller, White House Deputy Chief of Staff and the architect of President Trump's immigration policy, called Lyons "a dedicated leader."
"His courageous work at ICE saved thousands of American lives and contributed to the safety and peace of mind of millions," Miller said.
White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson described Lyons on social media as "a patriot who has made our country safer."
It is unclear who will replace Lyons. However, his successor will take over an agency with ample financial resources but which remains at the center of much controversy. ICE is currently the subject of debate in Congress , with Democratic lawmakers demanding limits on the power of immigration officers before agreeing to restore annual funding for the Department of Homeland Security.
