The club that Ronaldo co-owns is facing financial problems. |
Flamengo drew public attention with a strong statement targeting UD Almeria, regarding an outstanding debt of over 1.8 million euros that has remained unpaid for 590 days.
Notably, the Brazilian team also specifically mentioned Cristiano Ronaldo, who recently purchased a 25% stake in the Spanish club.
According to Flamengo, the debt arose from the transfer of striker Lazaro in August 2022. The club claims Almeria failed to fulfill its contractual financial obligations, despite the payment delay lasting nearly two years.
In a statement, Flamengo expressed "strong protest" against the Spanish team's behavior. They argued that the failure to pay the agreed-upon amount showed a disregard for international football regulations.
The situation escalated when Flamengo revealed they had to pay related taxes themselves, totaling over 1.5 million euros. Subsequently, FIFA ruled in favor of the Brazilian club for reimbursement. However, Almeria still failed to fulfill its financial obligations.
The mention of Cristiano Ronaldo in the statement also added weight to the story. Although not directly involved in the debt, his ownership of shares in the club increased public pressure.
Following Almeria's dismissive attitude, Flamengo confirmed they will take the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The club believes that this body will compel the Spanish team to comply with the rulings issued by FIFA.
After nearly 600 days of dispute, the matter remains unresolved and is expected to take both sides a considerable amount of time to settle amicably. Neither Almeria nor Ronaldo himself have made any statement regarding the incident.
