Many people mistakenly believe that washing their face frequently helps keep their skin clean. However, washing your face too much removes the skin's natural protective oil layer, leading to dryness, irritation, and even breakouts, according to the Indian health website Onlymyhealth .

Dr. Vidushi Jain, a dermatologist working in India, shared some of the harmful effects of washing your face too much.

Washing your face too often can be harmful to your skin. When you wash your face, the natural protective layer of oil on your skin (called sebum) is removed. This oil layer is very important, helping to keep the skin moisturized and prevent damage from the environment.

According to the journal Research Publication and Review , using facial cleanser too often can strip the skin of its natural oils, leaving it dry, irritated, and even more prone to oil production.

According to Jain, when we wash our faces frequently, the natural oils that protect the skin are removed, causing the skin to lose essential moisture. This makes the skin dry, rough, and even cracked, causing discomfort.

Furthermore, a damaged skin barrier makes the skin more susceptible to irritation and other problems.

When the skin loses its natural oils due to washing the face too frequently, the body automatically increases oil production to compensate. This leads to excessive oil secretion.

Although this is the body's natural response to keep the skin moisturized, this excess oil can clog pores. As a result, the skin becomes more prone to acne.

When skin is washed too frequently, its natural protective barrier is weakened, leading to increased irritation and sensitivity.

External factors such as weather, skincare products, or even facial movements can cause skin redness and discomfort.

In particular, if you use skincare products containing alcohol, fragrances, or acids, the irritation may become more severe.

The right way to wash your face

According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), you should wash your face once in the morning, once before bed, and after sweating profusely.

In addition, Jain also advises choosing a gentle facial cleanser that does not contain harsh chemicals or fragrances, and is suitable for each skin type such as oily, dry, or sensitive skin.
