Getting a red mole tattooed to change your luck could bring illness upon you.

In Hanoi , Dung, 32, heard about it from an acquaintance and had a red mole tattooed on her chest to pray for love and good luck. After a few days, she experienced redness, burning, and infection.

Despite being over 30, Ms. Minh, residing in Cau Giay district, was still single. Believing she was unlucky in love, she listened to a friend's advice and got a red mole tattooed to change her fortune. She researched that a mole on a woman's left breast signifies a charming personality, attracting many suitors and having children later in life.

Following a recommendation, she went to a tattoo parlor near her home, where the cost ranged from 100,000 to 200,000 VND, with "discounts for multiple tattoos." The person advised her that tattooing a mole on her right breast would bring her great fortune and success, while tattooing around her breasts would create a "treasure trove of gold and silver," helping her accumulate a lot of land, houses, and farms...

The establishment guarantees painless, swelling-free, and non-toxic tattooing, with a tattooing time of only 5-10 minutes and no special aftercare required. Staff use specialized tattooing tools to inject ink into the skin, then shape the beauty mark in the customer's desired location.

Thinking it was just a simple procedure, she decided to get two tattoos on her chest to bring good luck in the new year. After a day, she felt pain and burning in the area, thinking it was due to the anesthetic. Three days later, the tattooed area was red, inflamed, burning, and oozing fluid, so the woman went to the hospital for examination. The doctor determined it was an infection, caused by the tattoo needle penetrating too deeply into the skin. Fortunately, the damage had not spread, and she only needed to use medication and clean the area at home.

In another case, a 39-year-old woman, whose business had failed, got a tattoo on the back of her hand. The skin was thin, making it more painful. When she got home, the wound itched and ached constantly, which she thought was due to the anesthetic. "Believing the mole would bring good fortune, I accepted the pain," she said. After a week, the mole swelled and turned red, forming a pitted scar on her wrist, costing her millions of dong in medication and ointments.

The trend of getting feng shui mole tattoos has become popular in recent years. Near Tet (Lunar New Year), this service attracts many customers who are willing to spend money. Besides moles, people also get injections for good fortune, ear piercings, and Chinese-style nose shapes to seek luck.

On social media, many establishments advertise cheap mole tattooing services, promising to bring wealth, luck, love, and ensure charm and attractiveness. Popular locations for customers to get these tattoos include the wrist, palm, ear, and chest.

Besides getting tattoos at a shop, many customers also get them done at feng shui shops, which are more expensive due to consultation fees. Customers request readings about wealth, career, love life, and health, and then choose the injection location according to their request.

According to Global Times, tattooing red moles (cinnabar) is popular among many Chinese couples, especially those born after 2000, or Generation Z, to mark their "unique love." Many believe that tattooing moles changes fortune and brings wealth and luck. In the West, this trend appeared earlier, but for aesthetic purposes, not to seek good fortune.

Cultural expert Nguyen Anh Hong, a lecturer at the Academy of Journalism and Communication, noted that while the trend of tattooing is increasingly developing and being embraced by many young Vietnamese people, there are differences between the old and new mindsets. During the Van Lang - Au Lac period, men used tattoos as a substitute for armor to conceal themselves from enemies when they went shirtless and wore loincloths. During the Ly and Tran dynasties, this custom resurfaced, reflecting a culture that embraced its roots and a will to protect national independence.

But young people today get tattoos for different reasons. Some want to leave a mark, to express their personality. Many others follow trends, wanting tattoos to show off their power, inadvertently creating an unusual and different image.

Dr. Ta Quoc Hung, from the Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery Department at the University Medical Center of Ho Chi Minh City, said that tattooing moles is a simple, gentle procedure that is cheaper than large tattoos. However, not everyone with a mole will have a fulfilling life. "The belief that tattooing moles brings good luck is just hearsay and has not been scientifically verified," the doctor said.

Mole tattooing is an invasive procedure like other types of tattooing. If the ink is not of a reliable source, there is still a risk of skin inflammation, allergies, and infections. Tattoo needles that are not regularly changed can also cause the transmission of hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV viruses. Tattooing increases the risk of infection. People with weakened immune systems, such as those undergoing cancer treatment, suffering from arthritis, or lupus, need to be especially cautious.

The hospital has received many patients who experienced swelling and pain after getting moles tattooed because the tattoo needle penetrated too deeply into the skin. Patients often didn't know how to care for the wound properly at home, leading to severe ulceration.

Dr. Pham Duy Linh, from the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Duc Giang General Hospital, stated that according to physiognomy, all parts of the human body influence destiny. However, predicting fate and personality through moles is merely anecdotal information.

"Currently, there is no scientific research proving that moles affect one's fortune, so people should not be superstitious," the doctor said.

Doctors advise careful consideration before getting a tattoo, even a small one. Tattooing procedures should be done at licensed beauty salons. Cover the tattoo before going outside.

After getting a tattoo, if you notice any signs of skin disease or scarring, see a dermatologist. The doctor can help improve the scarring, diagnose and treat skin conditions early. After getting a tattoo, you need to follow your doctor's instructions to minimize infection and inflammation.

In cases of severe allergic reactions such as difficulty breathing, palpitations, chest tightness, or any unusual signs on the tattooed skin, it is necessary to go to the hospital for examination.
