A recent rumor from the supply chain suggests that heated debates are brewing within Apple regarding the removal of the MagSafe magnetic charging system from future iPhone models.
Apple's unexpected shift in stance on MagSafe
Since its debut on the iPhone 12, MagSafe has quickly become a standard in Apple's accessory ecosystem. However, according to a source from the Instant Digital account on Weibo, which has previously made many accurate predictions about Apple, engineers in Cupertino are starting to waver.

Sources indicate that although Apple once had ambitions to bring MagSafe to the iPad line, it is now discussing whether to continue keeping it as a standard feature on iPhones. This is a surprising move, as Apple recently contributed this magnetic charging technology to the global Qi2 standard and faced criticism for its experiment of removing MagSafe from the iPhone 16e last year.
Why would Apple want to abandon a feature that's been a huge money-maker for phone cases and chargers? The answer might lie in its ambition for minimalist design. The internal magnetic system takes up significant space, increasing thickness and manufacturing costs.
Meanwhile, Apple is reportedly focusing its efforts on a project called 'Glasswing' next year. The goal of this project is to transform the iPhone into a 'single sheet of glass' – a perfectly seamless device with no ports and no unnecessary components. Eliminating the MagSafe magnetic rings could make the device thinner, lighter, and pave the way for breakthroughs in internal hardware design.
Despite the rumors, experts remain skeptical. The MagSafe accessory ecosystem is already vast, encompassing thousands of products from Apple and third-party partners. A sudden abandonment of MagSafe would likely provoke a wave of outrage from users, similar to when Apple discontinued the 3.5mm headphone jack previously.
If this rumor turns out to be true, Apple will certainly need a new wireless charging and data transfer solution compelling enough to convince users to give up the expensive accessories they've painstakingly collected over the years.
