In 2023, in accordance with Decision No. 587/QD-BVHTTDL of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on organizing the 2nd Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day in 2023, Da Nang University of Sports and Physical Education implemented a plan to organize the 2023 Book and Reading Culture Day with the theme "Books: Awareness - Innovation - Creativity". The main focus was to promote the value and significance of Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day, linking it to the development of reading culture among staff, faculty, and students with the message "Books: For me, for you". During the event, students listened to discussions aimed at building healthy reading habits, promoting the importance of reading for learning and research; participated in exchanges and seminars on books and reading culture; honored readers and librarians; preserved, collected, and promoted books; exchanged methods and skills in reading, and developed skills in searching, exploiting, and using information. Commend and reward activities that promote learning.
Mr. Phan Thanh Hai, Rector of Da Nang University of Sports and Physical Education, stated: “Recognizing the importance of books in modern life, the university organizes the Book and Reading Culture Day annually. This is a meaningful and indispensable activity in educating thinking, awareness, and nurturing the soul and character not only of students but also of lecturers in the university, thereby actively serving teaching, learning, and scientific research activities. The Book and Reading Culture Day also contributes to implementing the policies and guidelines of the Party, the State, and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in promoting the cultural and humanistic values of Vietnamese people. Through this, it promotes the responsibility of organizations and units under the University in carrying out reading culture activities that are appropriate to practical conditions with focused, practical, and effective content.”
With the aim of making books a companion for students, the Da Nang University of Sports and Physical Education has regularly collaborated with various units, departments, and agencies to organize many extracurricular activities, workshops, and seminars on reading culture. These include activities such as celebrating Vietnam's Book and Reading Culture Day on April 21st , and the Lifelong Learning Week with diverse themes like Vietnam's Folk Culture Book Day; integrating activities such as displaying, introducing, and donating books to readers in need, including the book "Folk Culture" published by the Vietnam Association of Literature and Arts; and sending student representatives to participate in the 2022 Reading Culture Ambassador competition organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Each staff member is encouraged to read 2-3 books in April and recommended good books on the university website; and book donations, support, and exchanges are launched at the university library…
The school has made efforts to invest in and equip a modern library system to create the best conditions for students to access and develop a reading culture. Currently, the school's Information and Library Center, with a construction area of nearly 700m², is being upgraded and will soon be put into operation. The library houses many textbooks and reference materials compiled by the school, making it a reliable source for students when they need to search for materials and information. Over the past five years, the school library has attracted thousands of visits and searches annually. In addition to traditional materials, the school is also improving and developing its electronic resources. The library quickly applies the advantages of information technology in supplementing and updating materials, developing the library according to the trend of standardization and modernization, creating conditions for readers to access information conveniently, quickly, and accurately.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hai Vy, Head of the Information and Library Center, stated that, in addition to the advantages, the school library is currently facing some difficulties. The recent historic rainfall in Da Nang caused the library to be flooded to a depth of over 1 meter, damaging more than 50% of the books and documents. Currently, the library is conducting an inventory and liquidation process; any missing books will be reprinted. Moving towards building a digital library, the Information and Library Center is also collaborating with the Association of University Libraries, the Vietnam Open Educational Resources Library, and the Vietnam Online Scientific Journal, while simultaneously developing digital book files as a foundation for promoting library digitization in the future.
With many effective solutions, Da Nang University of Sports and Physical Education has been striving to build a reading culture for its students. In the future, the university will continue to innovate its management and educational methods, linking reading culture with students' self-study process, contributing practically to improving the quality of education and training. At the recent thematic event on Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day, April 21, 2023 , with the agreement of the Party Committee and the Board of Directors, the university, in coordination with the Da Nang City Youth Union, awarded the "For the Young Generation" commemorative medal - the highest award of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union - to outstanding union members; and also presented Certificates of Merit from the Rector to 5 teachers who achieved excellent results in academic advising during the 2022-2023 academic year.
