Ready for the third exam

Up to this point, the whole country has had 10 provinces and cities announce the third subject for the 10th grade entrance exam this year, mainly choosing Foreign Language. This is within the prediction of many people.

Recently, the People's Committee of Binh Duong province issued an official dispatch on the plan to enroll 10th graders in public and private high schools in the province for the 2025-2026 school year. Accordingly, in addition to Math and Literature, English is the third subject to enter 10th grade with a test time of 60 minutes. Binh Duong province plans to enroll a maximum of 70% of junior high school graduates in the 2024-2025 school year, about 20,847 targets (the expected number of students recognized as graduating from junior high school in the 2024-2025 school year is 23,988 students, accounting for 95% of the total number of 9th grade students) into public high schools, private high schools and vocational education - continuing education centers to enroll about 3,888 students.

Previously, the Department of Education and Training (DET) of Hai Phong City announced that the third subject in the entrance exam for grade 10 of high school in the 2025-2026 school year is Foreign Language, including English, French, Russian, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese.

The Department of Education and Training of Thua Thien Hue province has also announced that the third subject in the 10th grade entrance exam for the 2025-2026 school year in Hue city is a foreign language, including: English, French or Japanese. Students in Nghe An and Can Tho will take the third subject in 10th grade, which is English or French. A series of other localities have announced that the third subject is English, including Hai Duong, Ba Ria - Vung Tau, Quang Nam, Tien Giang, Dong Nai, and Thai Binh. Some localities have not officially announced, but are also expected to choose English as the third subject in 10th grade, including Ho Chi Minh City and Khanh Hoa.

Regarding the exam format and time, most provinces and cities organize multiple-choice tests in 60 minutes. The exam in Ba Ria - Vung Tau province has listening and writing sections, while Quang Nam is expected to have an essay section.

Thus, students and schools in these localities have had specific review orientations for the third exam subject for grade 10 high school this year, while many other provinces and cities have just announced reference exam questions for subjects so that schools have a basis for implementing teaching and organizing review for students within the scope of knowledge. However, because the junior high school program has many exam subjects, reviewing many subjects will be more difficult and more spread out than focusing on only 3 exam subjects. In particular, 2025 is the first year that the grade 10 exam is organized according to the new general education program (Program 2018). Compared to the old program, many subjects are taught integratedly such as History - Geography and Natural Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology). Therefore, the orientation of exam questions, content and number of exam subjects are of interest to parents and candidates.

As for the reference exam questions for the subjects in the combined exam announced by the Department of Education and Training of Vinh Phuc province, they include: Natural Sciences (including knowledge of Physics, Chemistry, Biology); History and Geography (knowledge of History, Geography) and English. Although this locality affirmed that the exam direction does not challenge students, the level of basic knowledge is within the scope of the 2018 general education program for secondary school level, mainly the 9th grade program, but with the review of many subjects, parents are worried that it will be difficult to achieve good results.

Previously, Circular 30 on the regulations for admission to secondary and high schools issued by the Ministry of Education and Training stipulated that the entrance exam for grade 10 from 2025 will be unified nationwide in the method of examination. Students will take two subjects: Math, Literature and a third subject. The third subject can be an independent subject or a combined test. In case provinces choose an independent subject, this choice must ensure that no one subject is taken for more than 3 consecutive years. The Ministry requires localities to announce before March 31, making it easier for students to review.

However, to facilitate students in completing their studies, reviewing, preparing well for the conditions, and creating a mindset ready to take the exam and achieve good results, the Ministry of Education and Training has issued an official dispatch requesting the Departments of Education and Training to urgently organize the selection and soon announce the third subject or exam.
