To date, 10 provinces and cities nationwide have announced the third subject for this year's 10th grade entrance exam, mostly foreign languages. This was within the predictions of many people.
Recently, the People's Committee of Binh Duong province issued a document regarding the plan for admission to 10th grade in public and private high schools in the province for the 2025-2026 school year. Accordingly, in addition to Mathematics and Literature, English will be the third subject for the 10th grade entrance exam, with a 60-minute exam time. Binh Duong province plans to admit a maximum of 70% of students graduating from junior high school in the 2024-2025 school year, approximately 20,847 places (the projected number of students recognized as graduating from junior high school in the 2024-2025 school year is 23,988 students, accounting for 95% of the total number of 9th grade students) into public high schools, while private high schools and vocational education /continuing education centers will admit approximately 3,888 students.
Previously, the Department of Education and Training of Hai Phong City announced that the third subject in the entrance exam for 10th grade high school in the 2025-2026 school year would be a Foreign Language, including English, French, Russian, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese.
The Department of Education and Training of Thua Thien Hue province has also announced that the third subject in the 2025-2026 10th grade entrance exam in Hue City will be a foreign language, including English, French, or Japanese. Students in Nghe An and Can Tho will take English or French as their third subject for the 10th grade entrance exam. A number of other localities have announced English as their third subject, including Hai Duong, Ba Ria - Vung Tau, Quang Nam, Tien Giang, Dong Nai, and Thai Binh. Some localities have not yet officially announced English as their third subject for the 10th grade entrance exam, but are also expected to choose it as their third subject, such as Ho Chi Minh City and Khanh Hoa.
Regarding the exam format and time allotted, most provinces and cities will organize multiple-choice exams lasting 60 minutes. The exam in Ba Ria - Vung Tau province will include listening and writing sections, while Quang Nam province is expected to include essay questions as well.
Thus, students and schools in these localities have specific review guidelines for the third subject in this year's 10th grade entrance exam, while many other provinces and cities have only just released sample exam questions for various subjects to provide schools with a basis for teaching and organizing review sessions for students within the scope of their knowledge. However, because the junior high school curriculum has many exam subjects, reviewing multiple subjects will be difficult and somewhat more scattered than focusing on just three exam subjects. In particular, 2025 is the first year the 10th grade entrance exam will be held under the new general education program (2018 program). Compared to the old program, many subjects are taught in an integrated manner, such as History - Geography and Natural Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology). Therefore, the orientation of the exam questions, content, and number of subjects are of great concern to parents and candidates.
According to the sample exam papers for the combined subject test published by the Department of Education and Training of Vinh Phuc province, the subjects included are: Natural Sciences (including Physics, Chemistry, and Biology); History and Geography (History and Geography); and English. Although the locality asserts that the exam questions are not designed to trick students, the level of knowledge is basic, and within the scope of the 2018 secondary school curriculum, mainly the 9th grade curriculum, parents are worried that students will find it difficult to achieve good results with the preparation for so many subjects.
Previously, Circular 30 on the regulations for admission to junior and senior high schools, issued by the Ministry of Education and Training, stipulated that the entrance exam for grade 10 from 2025 onwards would be standardized nationwide in terms of the examination method. Students will take exams in two subjects: Mathematics and Literature, and a third subject. The third subject can be a separate subject or a combined test. In cases where provinces choose a separate subject, this choice must ensure that the same subject is not tested for more than three consecutive years. The Ministry requires localities to announce the regulations before March 31st to facilitate students' preparation.
Nevertheless, to facilitate students' learning, completion of the curriculum, and revision, and to prepare them well and create a positive mindset for the exam and achieving good results, the Ministry of Education and Training has issued a document requesting the Departments of Education and Training to urgently organize the selection and early announcement of the third exam subject or test.
