The weather was hot and sunny, then suddenly there was heavy rain, causing the young durian fruits to fall off. In many orchards, the fruit drop rate reached 50%, resulting in significant losses for the farmers.

The durian trees belonging to households in Ia Tô have lost their fruit, leaving only the stems.

In Gia Lai province , durian is grown extensively in areas such as Chu Se, Chu Puh, Ia Grai, Chu Prong, Duc Co, and Chu Pah. At this time, the durians are ready for harvest. However, young durian fruits are falling off the trees everywhere.

Young fruits have fallen and are lying scattered everywhere.

Ia Grai district has over 600 hectares of durian orchards, of which nearly 450 hectares are in production. Nguyen The Anh's family (village 6, Ia To commune, Ia Grai district) cultivates 1.5 hectares of durian. Following him to inspect the orchard, we saw that the durian trees had sparse fruit, with young, fallen fruit scattered at the base. Some trees, despite their lush foliage, only bore 6 to 7 fruits.

“Last year, there was also fruit drop, but less. This year, this durian orchard has experienced significant fruit drop, with a rate of about 50%. Due to high costs of materials and fertilizers, the family is likely to suffer losses this year,” said Mr. Nguyen The Anh.

Similarly, the 1-hectare durian orchard of Mr. Le Trung Giang (village 6, Ia To commune) also suffered from fruit drop. The remaining evidence is the bare trunks with stems, and large and small fruits scattered all over the ground.

"This year's weather has been harsh, resulting in a low fruit setting rate. Although we haven't harvested yet, observing the fruit on the trees compared to last year, it's currently only 40 to 50%," Mr. Giang lamented.

Mr. Rơ Mah Klin, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ia Tô commune, said that the commune has 300 hectares of durian trees. Recently, due to unusual weather conditions, the durian fruit has fallen off. On average, the fruit drop rate is about 40%. The commune hopes that relevant departments will provide technical guidance to help durian trees be cared for more effectively in the future.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ia Grai district, following the fruit drop in many durian orchards, the district has sent officials to assess the damage. At the same time, relevant authorities are also researching remedial measures to guide farmers in minimizing fruit drop on durian trees.

Chu Se district has approximately 500 hectares of durian orchards, and fruit drop is a common problem in this district.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Chư Sê district, the communes and towns have not yet fully compiled statistics on the damage to durian orchards in the area. However, given the unfavorable weather conditions, the risk of a durian crop failure is unavoidable.

According to the same unit, to minimize losses due to fruit drop, the department has coordinated with the People's Committees of communes and towns to guide people to focus on caring for their durian orchards until harvest. In addition, they have encouraged people to prevent and control diseases affecting durian trees to ensure productivity.
