In the past, Mourinho has repeatedly hailed himself as "The Special One" or "The Only One." This has earned the Portuguese manager considerable animosity and has also made it difficult for him to maintain a stable long-term position at any club, despite his abundant talent. Evidence of this is that in his 26 years as a coach, Mourinho has never managed a team for more than four years.
Most recently, at Fenerbahce, after just one season he left behind a lot of notoriety due to controversies with referees and opponents. In addition, he made unfavorable comments targeting Turkish football. As a consequence, Mourinho was sacked after only 14 months in charge of Fenerbahce.
Because of this, many people are wondering: Is this the end of his career? This skepticism is understandable, given that his last tournament title was a decade ago!
But less than a month later, Mourinho received an offer to return to Portugal to manage Benfica, the club he had managed when he first started his career. Surprisingly, on his Benfica debut, Mourinho no longer made the same bold statements as before. Instead, he promised to become a better and less selfish person.
Coach Mourinho said: "We all change and will change for the better. I've become more selfless and less selfish, I think less about myself and more about the good things I can do for others, the joy I can bring to others. I'm not important, Benfica is important. The Benfica fans are important, they are the heart of the club. The players are also very important, and I'm here just to serve."
