Sports fans in Southeast Asia can expect a spectacular and exciting 33rd SEA Games, as host nation Thailand will bring many special elements to the event.

A country with extensive experience in organizing

In December 2021, Thailand applied to host the 33rd SEA Games and was approved by the SEAGF Council (representing Southeast Asian sports delegations) five months later. At the same time, Malaysia and Singapore were also announced as the host countries for the 34th (2027) and 35th (2029) SEA Games, respectively.

This hosting marks the 7th time Thailand has hosted the regional sporting event. Previously, Bangkok hosted it 4 times (1959, 1967, 1975, 1985) and the remaining 2 times were held in Chiang Mai (1995) and Nakhon Ratchasima (2007). Thailand is also the country that has hosted the SEA Games the most times in history (one more than Malaysia – which will equalize in 2027).

In October 2022, the National Olympic Committee of Thailand (NOCT) announced the bidding framework for the 2025 SEA Games, with the key principle being to organize the event at a reasonable cost and without the need for new venues. Ultimately, three main provinces/cities were selected: Bangkok, Songkhla, and Chiang Mai. However, due to the devastating floods in Songkhla in late November, all sporting events scheduled to take place in that province (including Group B of the men's football tournament featuring the Vietnam U23 team) were moved to Bangkok. The 33rd SEA Games will officially take place from December 7th to 20th.

Unique and unusual sports will be featured at the upcoming SEA Games in Thailand.

Interesting sports

At the 33rd SEA Games, Thailand included 50 sports in the competition, with a total of 574 medal events. Besides the always-highly-regarded Olympic sports, host nation Thailand also brought many other exciting sports. This is also a "specialty" of the Southeast Asian Games.

The focus of attention is the emergence of teqball, a newly emerging sport that combines the juggling and passing techniques of soccer with the reflexes of table tennis. Using a specially curved table, teqball requires players to possess excellent ball control and agility.

The 33rd SEA Games also featured kabaddi, a combat sport originating from South Asia. Kabaddi is a unique blend of wrestling and chasing, in which the attacking athlete must constantly hold their breath and shout "kabaddi" when entering the opponent's court. This sport requires not only strength but also endurance and extremely high breath control tactics.

Finally, wooden golf is also an interesting highlight, considered a minimalist, environmentally friendly version of golf. Players use wooden clubs to hit the ball into the goalposts, making it suitable for hosting in Thailand's existing venues, in line with the "Green SEA Games" criteria at a reasonable cost. This diversity not only enriches the competition program but also helps make the 33rd SEA Games a comprehensive playground, reflecting the dynamism and rich culture of Southeast Asia.

Goals of Vietnamese sports

The Vietnamese sports delegation arrived at the 33rd SEA Games with a clear set of objectives, not only focusing on achievements but also emphasizing spirit and cultural responsibility. With a total of over 1,000 members, including athletes, coaches, and medical staff , the Vietnamese delegation had made thorough preparations to maintain its position in the regional arena.

Regarding performance targets, based on professional assessments and training results, the Vietnamese sports delegation aims to achieve between 91 and 110 gold medals. This specific goal is to firmly maintain its position among the leading medal groups in Southeast Asia, building on the brilliant success from the two most recent SEA Games.

The leading and most important sports are still expected to contribute significantly to the medal tally, including athletics, swimming, shooting, fencing, karate, and wrestling. In particular, we are also determined to win two gold medals in men's and women's football. However, the delegation also acknowledges the challenges as some traditional "gold mines" like diving are not being held or have had their events reduced (as in wrestling).
