SEA Games 33 and hospitality

Upon landing at Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok, Thailand, Vietnamese reporters easily sensed the growing excitement surrounding the 33rd SEA Games. Compared to previous SEA Games, Thailand didn't make a big fuss, but it was still enough to satisfy and resonate with regional sports delegations, the media, and tourists.

At Suvarnabhumi Airport, groups of volunteers stood observing and welcoming. Although the Vietnamese journalists had not yet received their press passes, the volunteers still guided them through a separate entrance to enter the country.

Thailand is renowned for its excellent tourism practices, and international visitors are impressed by even the smallest gestures. Immediately after collecting our luggage and arriving at the airport lobby, we encountered numerous slogans about the SEA Games. Notably, at Gate 10, two booths distributing free 5G SIM cards were prominently displayed by the host organizing committee. Everyone involved with the 33rd SEA Games, including coaches, athletes, delegation officials, medical staff , and journalists, received SIM cards with unlimited internet data.

For journalists, this gift is extremely meaningful as it not only saves time but also avoids having to spend a considerable amount of money buying SIM cards to use during the SEA Games.

Suvarnabhumi International Airport remains as bustling as ever, but with the SEA Games underway, things become more orderly and there's more trust between people. This is the story of a very kind Grab driver we spoke to during our ride from the airport to the city center. In her early 50s, Ms. Pimchanok has a gentle smile. She said, “This is a challenging SEA Games for us. Thailand has never faced such difficulties, from floods to economic recession, but we still believe we are capable of bringing about a successful Games.”

Upon learning that we were reporters from Vietnam, Ms. Pimchanok was delighted, even surprising us by recounting in detail the events of the 2024 ASEAN Cup final between the Vietnamese national team and host Thailand. Ms. Pimchanok mentioned that her company had assigned her to work at the airport during the SEA Games. Remarkably, the taxi companies not only didn't raise prices but also significantly reduced them, offering numerous promotions and improving service quality. Our trip only cost around 300,000 VND, a relatively low price compared to trips to many other Southeast Asian cities.

Despite her age, Mrs. Pimchanok quickly assisted us with transporting our heavy suitcases. She also enthusiastically offered to drive a reporter to another location without charging extra because it was "on her way."

Hello Ms. Pimchanok, we all believe that the Thai people are very hospitable and kind. This is not only a human connection but also fosters trust, appreciation, and respect.

For us journalists, our initial impressions upon arriving in Thailand were pleasant, and importantly, everyone felt more at ease to work during the two weeks packed with SEA Games 33 events in the Land of Smiles.
