Disney and 20th Century Pictures' sci-fi blockbuster "Avatar: Fire and Ash" continues to hold the top spot at the North American box office for the third consecutive week, with an estimated $40 million in revenue over the past three days of the weekend.
According to Comscore figures released on January 4th, the third film in director James Cameron's "Avatar" series has grossed a total of $306 million in North America and $777.1 million internationally, bringing its global total to $1.03 billion.
This is the fourth film by the talented director Cameron to surpass the $1 billion mark, following “Titanic” (1997), “Avatar” (2009), and “Avatar: The Way of Water” (2022).
“These films always draw audiences to theaters,” said Paul Dergarabedian, Director of Market Analysis at Comscore. He believes that visually stunning 3D films like “Avatar” are “perfectly designed” for viewing in theaters.
Set after the events of "Avatar 2: The Way of Water" (2022), Avatar 3 continues the journey of former Marine Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), now the leader of the Na'vi tribe, along with his wife, the warrior Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña).
Sully's family faces a new threat as a mysterious Na'vi tribe – the Mangkwan Clan, also known as the Ash People – emerges. This Na'vi group lives in volcanic areas, symbolizing the element of fire in the film series.
Meanwhile, Disney's animated film "Zootopia 2" continued to hold the second position with $19 million in weekend revenue, bringing its total North American revenue after 6 weeks to $363.6 million. The film's current global total revenue is $1.59 billion, making it Disney's second-highest-grossing animated film, behind only "The Lion King" (2019) with $1.66 billion.
Third place went to Lionsgate's psychological thriller "The Housemaid," which grossed $14.9 million in its third week in theaters, bringing its total domestic revenue to $75.7 million.
According to Comscore, total North American box office revenue last weekend increased 26.5% compared to the same period in 2025, suggesting Hollywood has a promising start to 2026 after a dismal 2025 with domestic revenue reaching only $8.9 billion, a decrease of about 20% compared to the pre-COVID-19 pandemic period.
Film industry experts expect 2026 to be a box office hit, with a host of highly anticipated blockbusters such as “Toy Story,” “Avengers,” “Spider-Man,” “Super Mario Bros,” and “Dune” continuing to be released.
