Siu Thu - "Ageless Voice"

(GLO)- Announcers are the ones who contribute to the depth of emotions for the audience. There are voices that over the years have become memories in the hearts of listeners. Among them, translator and Bahnar announcer Siu Thu of Gia Lai Newspaper is considered an "ageless voice".

Continuing the family tradition

Many people often think that being a translator or an ethnic language announcer is a simple job, just reading what has been written. But for Ms. Siu Thu (full name Siu Le Thu), each news report is a “brainchild” that needs to be nurtured with emotion, responsibility and especially with respect for the language of her own ethnic group.

Siu Thu said: Her parents were Bahnar translators for the Voice of Vietnam . When she was young, she often followed her parents to work. The sounds, recording equipment, old tapes, microphones and the carefulness in each translation that her parents made were absorbed in her without her knowing when. The love for her mother tongue and that quiet work gradually grew, creating the motivation for her to continue her parents' career path.

Before Gia Lai- Kon Tum province was separated, she was a broadcaster and Bahnar translator for the provincial Radio and Television Station. In 1991, when the province was separated and the Gia Lai Provincial Radio and Television Station was established, she was one of the contributors to the ethnic language section, alongside journalists such as: Le Kim Tuong, Dinh Thi Kip, Dinh Theu...

At that time, the facilities were lacking, the recording equipment was outdated, and the radio program only lasted a few dozen minutes a day, but for Ms. Siu Thu, meticulousness, carefulness, and dedication were indispensable. At that time, although she was only over 20 years old, she was guided by her seniors so she had formed a careful and serious working style.

From only 15 minutes of television and 30 minutes of radio each day, the Bahnar language now has 30 minutes of television, 30 minutes of radio and 15 minutes of afternoon news. During that development journey, Ms. Siu Thu has always been like a “silent warrior”, helping the ethnic program maintain its identity.

She confided: “Reading a news report in an ethnic language is not only about correct pronunciation, but also about conveying the emotion and spirit of the language.” That is why, even though she has been reading for more than 30 years, her voice is always full of emotion. Even though time has turned her hair gray, her voice still resonates steadily, with a clear, warm, full sound, with an echo, like the breath of the mountains and forests, making it easy for listeners to understand and feel.

“Kơ kuh kon pơ lei pang de bol! Krao apơi kon pơ lei pang de bol mong to drong roi to boh nor Bahnar dong Anih pơih Rơ jeo-pơ dah rup Gia Lai ” (Hello everyone! Please listen to the Bahnar radio program of Gia Lai Radio and Television Station). Her familiar greeting in each program has been deeply imprinted in the memory of many Gia Lai people.

The man behind the high quality work

If you only listen to the voice of announcer Siu Thu on the air, many people may not know that she has contributed significantly to the success of many journalistic works produced by reporters of Gia Lai province and media units. Among them, some works have won high prizes at the national television festival and awards: National Press, Golden Hammer and Sickle, Dien Hong...

I have worked with her on many contest entries, including a radio work that won the Golden Hammer and Sickle Award in 2021; a television work that won the National Press Award on the National Assembly and People's Councils in 2024. Honestly, I have to thank her very much. Her voice makes the words I write linger longer in the minds of listeners, contributing to highlighting the message and bringing success to the work.

When I asked her, “What do you feel most satisfied and impressed with in your career? How do you maintain such a consistent performance?”, she smiled and said, “Every time I receive a work, I study it very carefully. You have to understand and feel it to read each genre properly in order to read it well. If you read without feeling, the listener will not remember anything.”

A simple answer but a whole philosophy of her career. This year, she retires according to the regime. But I know, she will not leave the radio and television waves completely. She will still be a guide for the young, a mature voice to learn from, an example of perseverance, humility and dedication.
