Siu Thu - "A timeless voice"

(GLO) - Radio announcers contribute to the emotional depth for their audience. Some voices have become cherished memories in the hearts of listeners over the years. Among them, Siu Thu, a translator and announcer of the Bahnar language at Gia Lai Newspaper, is considered a "timeless voice."

Continuing the family tradition

Many people often think that being a translator or broadcaster of ethnic languages is a simple job, just reading what has already been written. But for Siu Thu (full name Siu Le Thu), each news report is a "spiritual child" that needs to be nurtured with emotion, responsibility, and above all, with respect for her own ethnic language.

Siu Thu recounted: Her parents were Bahnar language translators for the Voice of Vietnam radio station . As a child, she often accompanied them to work. The sounds, recording equipment, old tapes, microphones, and the meticulousness in each translation her parents produced gradually seeped into her. Her love for her mother tongue and their quiet work slowly blossomed, motivating her to follow in her parents' footsteps.

Before the separation of Gia Lai and Kon Tum provinces, she was a Bahnar language announcer and translator for the provincial Radio and Television Station. In 1991, when the province was divided and the Gia Lai Provincial Radio and Television Station was established, she was one of the contributors to the ethnic language section, alongside journalists such as Le Kim Tuong, Dinh Thi Kip, and Dinh Theu...

Back then, facilities were scarce, recording equipment was outdated, and radio programs only lasted a few dozen minutes each day. But for Siu Thu, meticulousness, carefulness, and dedication were never lacking. Even though she was only in her early twenties, she had developed a careful and serious work ethic thanks to the guidance of her seniors.

From just 15 minutes of television and 30 minutes of radio airtime each day, the Bahnar language now has 30 minutes of television coverage, 30 minutes of radio broadcasts, and 15 minutes of evening news on television. Throughout this development, Siu Thu has always been a "silent warrior," helping the ethnic program maintain its identity.

She confided, "Reading a news report in an ethnic language isn't just about pronunciation; it's also about conveying the emotion and spirit of the language." That's why, even after more than 30 years of reading, her voice is always full of emotion. Though time has turned her hair gray, her voice remains steady, clear, warm, and full, with a lingering resonance, like the breath of the mountains and forests, making it easy for listeners to understand and feel.

“Kơ kuh kon pơ lei păng đe bôl! Krao apơi kon pơ lei păng đe bôl mơng tơ drong roi tơ bôh nơr Bahnar đơng Anih pơih rơ jeo-pơ dah rup Gia Lai” (Greetings everyone! Please listen to the Bahnar language radio program of Gia Lai Radio and Television Station). This familiar greeting from her on each program has left a lasting impression on many people in Gia Lai.

The person behind high-quality works

If you only hear the voice of announcer Siu Thu on the airwaves, many people might not know that she has made a significant contribution to the success of numerous journalistic works produced by reporters from Gia Lai province and other media outlets. Some of these works have won high awards at national television festivals and other awards such as the National Journalism Award, the Golden Hammer and Sickle Award, and the Dien Hong Award.

I've worked with her on many competition entries, including a radio program that won the Golden Hammer and Sickle Award in 2021 and a television program that won the National Press Award on the National Assembly and People's Councils in 2024. Honestly, I have to thank her very much. Her voice makes the words I write resonate longer in the listener's mind, contributing to the message and the success of the work.

When I asked her, "What is the most satisfying and impressive thing about your career? How do you maintain such consistent quality?", she smiled and said, "Every time I receive a piece of work, I study it very carefully. You have to understand and feel it to read each genre correctly in order to read it well. If you read without feeling, the listener won't remember anything."

A simple answer, yet it encapsulates her entire professional philosophy. This year, she retired. But I know she won't completely leave radio and television broadcasting. She will still be a mentor for young people, a mature voice to learn from, and an example of perseverance, humility, and dedication.
