Are smartphones really that durable?

Smartphones have become an indispensable part of daily life, so their durability is a major concern.

The problem is, although many new smartphone models like the iPhone 16 Pro are equipped with titanium casings and crack-resistant glass, their protective capabilities still have limitations that don't quite meet consumer expectations. What are these limitations and how can they be improved?

Issues affecting smartphone durability today

One of the major problems today is that the back of smartphones is still easily damaged. Although many devices use durable materials like titanium or aluminum, glass remains a weak point. Glass can crack or scratch when subjected to impact, and no one wants to own a smartphone with an unsightly crack. Therefore, using a sturdy case is essential to protect the value of the device.

Even with the best IP68 water resistance rating among common standards, the protection is still insufficient. Users cannot take their phones into the bathroom or while swimming without worry. Corrosive substances like chlorine and salt can damage the water-resistant coating, and hopefully, in the future, manufacturers will aim for IP69/IP69K standards to improve protection.

The new Huawei Pura 70 smartphone uses many domestically sourced components.

The trend of designing smartphones with thin bezels also brings many risks. The closer the screen is to the edge, the higher the chance of cracking. Creating a raised bezel can help protect the screen without compromising aesthetics. Foldable smartphones, in particular, are more vulnerable due to their complex structure and the risk of dust ingress.

Ultimately, despite manufacturers investing heavily in design, smartphone damage still happens far too often. Keeping smartphones in the same pocket as keys can lead to scratches, and shiny materials are prone to fading. This is frustrating for consumers, especially after they've spent a significant amount of money on the device.

In summary, while modern smartphones have seen many improvements in durability, there are still many issues that need to be addressed. Users should consider using phone cases and other protective measures to keep their devices in the best possible condition.
