Improve economic efficiency
Thanks to favorable weather and the application of rational and effective farming methods, this year's winter-spring crop yielded an income of over 10 million VND for Mr. Nguyen Dang Hien's garden in Van Bac residential area, Ba Don ward. Although this figure is not large compared to large-scale production models, for Mr. and Mrs. Hien, who are elderly, this is a significant source of income. "Since being recognized as a model garden in 2023, my family has been more systematic in our farming practices, and productivity has increased significantly. Our current income is double what it was before," Mr. Hien shared.

A noteworthy aspect is his method of "rotating" crops in the garden. After the garlic, tomato, and cucumber harvest, Mr. Hien switches to planting corn, winter squash, and then various summer vegetables. As a result, the garden is almost never idle, providing a steady stream of work and a stable income throughout the year.
It's not just Mr. Hien's family; many other households in Van Bac are also effectively exploiting the economic benefits of their model gardens. Mr. Doan Xuan Thien's garden, covering approximately 800 square meters, flexibly combines livestock farming and crop cultivation. Besides raising about 100 egg-laying chickens, he also grows vegetables such as cucumbers, chayote, bitter melon, cabbage, and gourds. In the winter-spring season alone, his garden brings in about 12-13 million VND. Mr. Thien happily said: "Doing a model garden is enjoyable because it provides daily work and a steady income, like having an extra 'pension fund' at home."
Meanwhile, Mr. Cao Minh Hien chose a different path. From a low-yielding, mixed-crop garden, he improved the land and invested in planting over 400 guava trees and orchids. Thanks to this suitable crop conversion, his family's income increased significantly and became much more stable than before when they were growing rice, cassava, or traditional vegetables.

In reality, model gardens have helped people make the most of their garden land, diversify crops and livestock, thereby increasing the value per unit area. Without requiring large investments, but with proper planning and technical care, each garden can become a sustainable source of livelihood.
Changing the mindset in production
Beyond just economic benefits, the model garden brings about a significant change in people's production mindset. Previously, many households practiced gardening spontaneously, without much attention to technique or long-term planning. However, by participating in the model garden project, people are forced to learn and apply scientific and technological advancements to their production.
Mr. Doan Xuan Thien said: "Since starting the model garden, I've had to learn more systematic methods, invest in an automatic irrigation system and sunshade structures. Thanks to this, the plants grow well, yield and quality are higher, and economic efficiency has increased 3-4 times compared to before."

Another noticeable change is the trend towards clean, organic farming. Mr. Cao Minh Hien shared that he used to mainly use chemical fertilizers, but after learning from other models and through the internet, he switched to using manure, fish emulsion, and organic products. “With organic farming, the plants are healthier, less susceptible to pests and diseases, and have stronger root systems. The guavas are also sweeter, crispier, and tastier than before. Since then, I have completely adopted this method,” Mr. Hien said.
This transformation not only helps improve the quality of agricultural products but also contributes to environmental protection, moving towards sustainable agriculture—something that local authorities are encouraging.
Mr. Nguyen Minh Hoi, Deputy Head of the Economic-Infrastructure and Urban Planning Department of the Ba Don Ward People's Committee, said that in recent times, developing model gardens has been one of the economic development targets and tasks in the area. Currently, all model gardens follow organic production methods, with local people focusing on cultivation to achieve high efficiency per unit area. The ward will focus on directing the replication of model gardens and green agricultural models in the area to increase income, stabilize livelihoods, and improve economic efficiency.
