(iHay) Few rivers in the countryside evoke such a unique emotion in me as the Son River in Bo Trach district, Quang Binh province. The nature here is surprisingly peaceful, gentle, and pristine.

There are at least two legends about the Son River – the river that flows directly from inside Phong Nha Cave. One is the story of a young couple in love who, due to their unequal social standing, chose to end their lives in this river as a protest against outdated customs. Out of compassion for their love, the villagers named the river Son River, as a reminder of their faithful and unwavering love.
The second legend is associated with the war between the Tay Son rebels and the army of Nguyen Anh (King Gia Long). A fierce battle took place on this river, causing the river water to turn a deep red color. The name Son River (Red River) originated from this event.
Sitting on the boat cruising along this river, amidst the picturesque scenery, I felt an unusual sense of peace. Naturally, this only strengthened my belief in the legend of the unwavering and faithful love between the young couple associated with the river's name.

Green is the dominant color here, from the emerald-green water to the lush, cool greenery of the trees lining the banks. Occasionally, against this green backdrop, a three-room house with a red tiled roof, or a church with a cross standing tall, creates a truly poetic scene.
Someone who came here wrote these words about the green color of the Son River: "The light green of the sugarcane fields, the green of the rice seedlings, the deep green of the forest." A peaceful, gentle, and surprisingly clear picture of nature. Whether you come here early in the morning or leave after noon, the Son River always gives visitors a sense of peace that not every river or natural place can bestow upon humanity.

At noon, after devouring the lush green grass that had sprouted after the previous night's rain, a few buffaloes leisurely waded into the cool water. The further you go towards Phong Nha Cave, the fewer houses and villages you'll find on either side of the river. If you visit Phong Nha Cave during this season, you'll still easily encounter a few tourist boats, but of course, they won't be as crowded as in the summer.

Geographically, the Son River, also known as the Trok River, is a tributary of the Gianh River, flowing entirely within Quang Binh province. Notably, the upper reaches of the river, nearly 8,000 meters long, flow underground through limestone mountains, including the famous Phong Nha Cave.
This is also why the river water is always a clear, emerald green, and its bottom is full of submerged rocks. Therefore, although the surface of the river is picturesque and peaceful, due to the characteristics of the limestone mountains, the flow of this river always carries lurking dangers. Don't be foolish enough to jump in and swim just because the water is clear and cool!
