Instead of experiencing the exhilarating atmosphere of football, many Manchester United fans had to struggle through crowds, traffic jams, and confusing regulations from French local authorities, to the point of missing the opening whistle.
Ahead of the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final at Parc Olympique Lyonnais, Manchester United fans were required to comply with strict security procedures from the French authorities. Accordingly, all visiting fans had to go to the Eurexpo Convention Center – more than 10 km from the stadium – to receive identification wristbands; otherwise, they would be denied entry.
Worse still, the Lyon metro system malfunctioned, forcing thousands of people to queue and crowd onto designated buses provided by the organizers ("Shuttle 1 Stadium" route). Those not on this bus route were denied access to the away fans' section of the stadium, according to the Daily Mail.

Many fans expressed their frustration, writing: "A ridiculous mess," "The stadium is far from the city center, and they even make us go around to get a new wristband before we can proceed," "It's a complete farce," "Who wants to sit in a car going around in circles during rush hour to get a wristband and then have to wait for another bus to get into the stadium?", "Traffic is paralyzed, and the wristbands are illogical. There was no conflict, yet we're still being treated like this..."
Images of the Manchester United fan section being almost empty right before kick-off went viral on social media. It wasn't until the 17th minute that television commentators confirmed the section was full.
Manchester United immediately apologized to fans for the inconvenience, while also stating that they could not change the decision of local authorities. Lyon had even initially wanted to set up two wristband distribution points deep within the city center.
"We understand and apologize for the serious inconvenience caused to your plans. Please rest assured that the club has made every effort to make changes, but ultimately we must comply with the host country's security directives," the MU statement read.
The fans' experience worsened when their team drew 2-2 with Lyon. Goalkeeper Andre Onana made mistakes leading to both goals, causing the "Red Devils" to lose their advantage going into the second leg.
