Use electricity wisely to control costs.

As the dry season peaks, temperatures in Khanh Hoa remain high, sometimes exceeding 38°C, leading to a sharp increase in household electricity demand. This reality results in higher electricity bills for many families compared to previous months. According to electricity sector statistics, the main reasons are increased consumption and the tiered pricing system. However, people can proactively control their costs if they use electricity wisely.

Increased electricity consumption leads to increased costs.

Mr. Kieu Thanh Niem, Head of Business Department of Khanh Hoa Power Company, said: "According to statistics from recent years, during the hot season, the electricity consumption for household use in the area managed by the company usually increases by an average of 20 to 40% compared to other months of the year, with some households experiencing an increase of over 50%. The main reason is the increased time and frequency of use of cooling devices such as air conditioners, electric fans, and other household appliances."

In reality, an air conditioner with a capacity of 1 to 1.5 HP, if operating 8 to 10 hours/day, can consume 8 to 12 kWh/day, equivalent to 240-360 kWh/month. When using appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, water heaters, etc., simultaneously, the total electricity consumption of a household can reach 400 to 500 kWh/month. Meanwhile, the current retail price of electricity for household use is based on a tiered pricing system with 6 tiers, which does not change seasonally. However, the price at the highest tier is about 1.5 to 1.7 times higher than the lowest tier. Therefore, when electricity consumption increases, the excess electricity will be charged at the higher rate, causing the total electricity bill to increase rapidly. If electricity consumption increases by just 250kWh to 350kWh per month, the electricity bill could rise from around 500,000 VND to over 800,000 VND, depending on the total electricity used.

Based on real-world observations, Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan (Phan Rang ward) stated: “In February, my family used about 280kWh, but in March it increased to nearly 400kWh. After receiving an explanation from the electricity company, I understood the reason was the increased use of air conditioners and other appliances during the hot season, leading to a tiered electricity bill.” Mr. Tran Van Hung (Dong Hai ward) shared: “When the electricity bill increased, I started monitoring my daily electricity consumption on the app. Then, I adjusted my usage habits, especially limiting the continuous use of the air conditioner, and as a result, the cost has decreased.”

Proactively use electricity economically and efficiently.

Given the above situation, Khanh Hoa Power Company advises people to adjust their electricity usage habits to be more economical and rational. According to technical calculations, setting air conditioners to 26-28°C instead of 22-24°C can save 10-15% of electricity consumption; combining this with the use of electric fans still ensures effective cooling while significantly reducing electricity consumption. In addition, people should limit the simultaneous use of multiple high-power appliances during peak hours (from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM; from 5 PM to 8 PM daily); prioritize choosing appliances with 4- to 5-star energy efficiency ratings or inverter technology to save 20-30% of electricity.

Regular cleaning and maintenance of air conditioners helps the equipment operate efficiently and save electricity during the hot season.

Currently, the Central Power Corporation (EVNCPC) provides tools to help customers monitor their electricity consumption daily and periodically through the Customer Care application (EVNCPC CSKH) and the EVNCPC CSKH website. This allows people to proactively control their electricity usage and promptly detect any unusual increases. Mr. Ho Thai Yen Kha, Director of Khanh Hoa Power Company, stated: “The company always ensures stable electricity supply and maintains transparency in meter reading and billing for all customers. Customers can check meter readings, compare consumption figures, and contact the EVNCPC Customer Care hotline for timely answers to any questions.”

With the heatwave continuing, saving electricity not only helps each family reduce costs by hundreds of thousands to millions of dong per month, but also contributes to reducing pressure on the power system during peak hours. Understanding and using electricity wisely is the solution to prevent electricity bills from skyrocketing during the hot season.
