The new mission of Da Nang's "tourism ambassador"

With the motto "Professionalism for further growth, responsibility for sustainability," the city's team of tour guides continues to enhance their role and responsibility in the ever-developing tourism sector, especially in the expanded area after the merger, contributing to the overall development of Da Nang tourism.

Build a team of professional instructors.

According to the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, after the merger of the Quang Nam and Da Nang Tourist Guide Associations, the Da Nang Tourist Guide Association currently has a total of 2,650 members, of which 1,717 members renewed their membership in 2025, and 309 new members registered.

The association has 9 affiliated clubs including: English, French, Vietnamese, Chinese, Korean, German, Japanese , and Russian-speaking tour guide clubs, and the Korean market tour guide club.

According to Mr. Vo Van Anh, Chairman of the Da Nang Tourist Guide Association, over the past year, the Da Nang Tourist Guide Association, in coordination with the Travel Management Department of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, successfully organized 10 training sessions to update knowledge for renewing tour guide licenses in 2025 for nearly 1,000 tour guides.

“To update tour guide knowledge and improve professional skills, the branch association, in coordination with the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, organized a training course for tour guides serving the Indian market; and successfully organized the City's Excellent Tour Guide Competition. At the same time, we regularly organize training courses to update tour guide knowledge and professional skills, such as: a survey of the Da Nang Museum, training for young tour guides on the Ngu Hanh Son - Hoi An route, sharing experiences on the Hue - Da Nang - Hoi An route, outbound tour guide training, organizing study tours on the Quang Binh - Quang Tri - Hue route, and experiencing the Tien Sa Show and Heritage Show,” Mr. Vo Van Anh informed.

Sharing his thoughts on the advantages following the merger, tour guide Huynh Ngoc Hung stated that the biggest benefit currently is the improved legal framework. “The standardization of tour guide cards across localities is not simply a single card; it's a recognition that we are a team of ‘common ambassadors’ for the entire heritage region. This helps tour guides work with confidence, eliminating any apprehension about administrative boundaries, allowing them to fully focus on serving tourists and creating tour content,” said tour guide Huynh Ngoc Hung.

Apply knowledge flexibly.

With the expansion of the tourism area, tour guides have more attractions, check-in points, and experiences to introduce to tourists; the content of their explanations about Da Nang has become more diverse and rich. Currently, there are 57 tourist areas and attractions in the city, which forces tour guides to constantly update and supplement information and survey new routes and destinations to better serve tourists.

Given the current technological advancements, tour guide Tran My Quyen believes that, along with the vast area after the merger, there is a strong development of AI. Therefore, each tour guide needs to make greater efforts to combine traditional guiding skills, update information on new destinations, and flexibly and effectively apply AI; especially to enhance the ability to convey each explanatory content in order to touch the emotions of tourists.

“Tour guides need to connect and create information systems for routes and destinations such as the “Heritage Journey” from the Cham Museum - Hoi An Ancient Town - My Son Sanctuary; routes to “red addresses” like Dien Hai Citadel - 2/9 Monument - Hoa Vang Cemetery - K20 Historical Site - Monument to the Heroic Vietnamese Mother; routes to traditional craft villages such as Non Nuoc stone carving, Nam O - Man Thai fish sauce making, Tuy Loan rice paper making, Thanh Ha pottery making, Kim Bong carpentry...

Besides strengthening the team of skilled tour guides, the Da Nang Tourism Association in general and the Da Nang Tour Guide Association in particular need to organize more experiential surveys for tour guides at newly merged historical and tourist attractions,” suggested tour guide Tran My Quyen.

Although the areas have been consolidated, each route still retains its own unique cultural and historical characteristics, requiring guides to be flexible in order to convey this information appropriately to tourists.

Tour guide Huynh Ngoc Hung shared: “We don't just learn about the destinations, but also about the underlying cultural currents. Instead of taking tourists to see each individual temple, we tell them about the journey of ancient merchants from the sea to the old town. The standardized cards also help us design seamless 'themed tours' across the region.”

In addition, the city government and the City Tourism Association need to establish standardized rest stops along inter-provincial routes, ensuring the health of both tourists and tour guides. Simultaneously, they should strengthen the digitization of tour guide data. Once a shared digital data bank for the entire region is established and standardized, the knowledge will also be standardized so that tourists can receive the most accurate and valuable information about local culture from any tour guide they encounter.”
