Sunderland has shown ambition to become a force in the Premier League. |
After the first three rounds of the 2025/26 Premier League season, Sunderland have won two matches and sit in sixth place in the table. The Times commented that Sunderland are one of the biggest surprises after the first month of the new Premier League season.
Under the leadership of young owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, the club nicknamed "The Black Cats" showed great ambition in their first season back in the Premier League, not simply aiming to avoid relegation.
With their bold transfer moves, they have surprised many big clubs in Europe. A prime example of Sunderland's ambition is their successful persuasion of midfielder Granit Xhaka from Bayer Leverkusen.
Xhaka agreed to forgo the chance to play in the Champions League this season to join a team that had just been promoted from the Championship. Sunderland even beat AC Milan and clubs from Saudi Arabia in the race for Xhaka.
Xhaka quickly made his mark at Sunderland. |
At the end of the 2025 summer transfer window, Sunderland spent a total of approximately £150 million on 14 players, placing them in the top 10 highest-spending clubs in Europe this summer, surpassing many giants from Serie A and La Liga.
Nevertheless, the money earned from selling players like Jobe Bellingham (to Borussia Dortmund) and Tommy Watson (to Brighton) amounted to around £50 million, bringing the team's net spending down to £100 million. This leaves Sunderland with sufficient funds to continue recruiting new players in January 2026 if needed.
