Approximately one week before hospitalization, the patient (a 49-year-old woman residing in Thanh Hoa) developed a fever, fatigue, and progressively worsening shortness of breath. When her condition deteriorated with persistently high fever and severe difficulty breathing, she was transferred to Hoa Binh General Hospital ( Phu Tho ) for emergency treatment.
Here, doctors noted that the patient was in respiratory failure and suffering from severe infection and intoxication. Upon examination, doctors discovered a characteristic ulcer caused by a mite bite in the right popliteal fossa. Test results showed that the patient had acute liver damage, acute kidney damage, pneumonia with bilateral pleural effusion.
The patient was diagnosed with multiple organ failure due to scrub typhus and was quickly placed on mechanical ventilation, given specific antibiotics, and received intensive resuscitation measures. After two weeks of intensive treatment, the patient was weaned off the ventilator, the damaged organs recovered, and the patient was discharged.
According to experts, scrub typhus is an acute infectious disease caused by the bacterium Orientia tsutsugamushi, transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mite larvae. The disease manifests in various ways, including high fever, headache, body aches, rash, swollen lymph nodes, and especially skin ulcers at the site of the mite bite.
If left undiagnosed and untreated, the disease can damage multiple organs such as the lungs, heart, liver, and kidneys, and threaten life. To prevent the disease, people should wear long clothing, use insect repellent, and avoid sitting or lying directly on grass or near bushes when going into the forest, working in fields, or in areas with dense vegetation.
