The Manchester United owner lost a staggering £2 billion. |
According to the newly released Sunday Times Rich List , the owner of INEOS now possesses an estimated fortune of around £15.194 billion, a sharp decrease from last year's figure of £17.046 billion. Despite this, Ratcliffe remains in the top 10 richest people in the UK.
The 71-year-old billionaire's fortune plummeted due to INEOS's ever-growing debt, declining revenue, and losses totaling £515.7 million. Financial reports show the group had a net debt of approximately £10.66 billion as of March 2026.
Ratcliffe officially became a minority shareholder of Manchester United in 2024, holding 28.94% of the club's shares. Since then, the Old Trafford club has consistently implemented drastic cost-cutting measures.
Two rounds of layoffs have reduced Manchester United's staff by almost a third. The management has also tightened player salaries amid concerns that the club cannot guarantee stable revenue from the Champions League. According to internal regulations, players' salaries will automatically be reduced by 25% if MU fails to qualify for Europe's most prestigious tournament.
However, Manchester United's financial situation is expected to improve significantly after the team returns to the Champions League next season. Prize money from the tournament alone could bring in around £100 million for the club.
However, MU still faces immense debt pressure. The club has outstanding debts of around £480 million, while also needing to pay over £509 million in outstanding transfer fees. In this context, the MU management announced an increase in season ticket prices for next year to boost revenue.
