Responding to phenomena known as "voices on social media" requires both timely and appropriate action...
In the first week after the Lunar New Year holiday of 2025, along with the positive atmosphere and optimistic signs in many areas, there are at least three stories that highlight the importance and necessity of voices on social media.
Firstly, price gouging targeting locals and tourists in numerous localities has been discovered, exposed, and condemned. Based on this information, authorities immediately intervened, and these unscrupulous traders were punished appropriately.
Secondly, disturbing images of an official from the Land Development Center in Hanoi assaulting a male pickup truck driver went viral. Following this, the aggressive individual was prosecuted and detained.
Images of officials beating people have sparked public outrage.
Thirdly, a woman from Dong Nai was attacked by a dog while resting in front of a house in Dak Lak . A few days later, the dog died of rabies, and the homeowner quickly posted information asking for help in finding the dog and warning the victim. The woman was able to get vaccinated in time.
The positive outcome from the wave of sharing on internet platforms, as illustrated by the three examples above, once again confirms that, in addition to the effects, the speed of information is undeniably essential.
For a long time, many government agencies have done quite well in utilizing these characteristics in management and standardizing social norms; the question is whether it should be done better.
In this context, responding to phenomena known as "voices on social media" requires both timely and reasonable action, while maintaining a strict stance against negative behavior and promoting and spreading humanistic values.
The measures taken to clarify and handle the incident involving a traffic police officer making unrestrained remarks to a girl in a video shared on February 9th are, in a way, a test of the aforementioned requirement.
