To build muscle, you need to exercise - Photo: Q. DINH

We have treated many young athletes or bodybuilders who have experienced complications such as liver damage, cardiovascular problems, psychiatric disorders like aggression and mood swings, and endocrine disorders such as decreased natural hormone production.

Don't use too much creatine or protein.

Kidney damage can result from excessive creatine and protein intake. In some cases, intense and prolonged bodybuilding or gym workouts, combined with high creatine and protein intake, have led to rhabdomyolysis, hematuria, increased protein, elevated creatinine, urea, and potassium levels, resulting in acute kidney failure requiring dialysis. We recently treated several such cases at E Hospital.

Whey protein is derived from the liquid portion of milk separated during the cheese-making process. It is a mixture of protein and other components. Common side effects of whey protein include digestive issues (bloating, stomach cramps, or diarrhea), especially in people with lactose intolerance or milk allergies.

Consuming excessive amounts of whey protein can lead to kidney overload, especially in individuals with a history of kidney disease. Additionally, it can worsen acne, cause nutritional imbalances due to overuse, and reduce the intake of essential natural plant and animal nutrients.

Physical weakness and infertility due to muscle-building drugs.

Prolonged use of anabolic steroid or pre-steroid hormones can cause liver damage, increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, and lead to hormonal imbalances.

It can even reduce natural testosterone production, causing infertility, erectile dysfunction, mood swings, and increased aggression. Long-term use may increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Specifically, prolonged use of muscle-building drugs and supplements can lead to a physiological and biochemical dependence on the drugs and supplements, resulting in a feedback mechanism that inhibits the assimilation, metabolism, tolerance, and absorption of protein, carbohydrates, fats, minerals, and trace elements from natural sources.

The ultimate consequence is that abruptly and improperly stopping the use of medications and supplements, along with stopping muscle-building exercises, will lead to severe disruptions in the anabolic, metabolic, tolerable, and absorbent functions of these substances, causing muscle wasting, muscle atrophy, myocardial damage, impaired function of the musculoskeletal, circulatory, endocrine, reproductive systems, and salt and water metabolism... Ultimately, this results in physical weakness and disability.

What to do to safely build muscle?

It is necessary to consult a sports doctor or a relevant specialist to assess your condition, any related illnesses, and receive thorough treatment; to evaluate your physical capacity and fitness. In particular, during training, you should coordinate with your coach and sports doctor for regular check-ups, assessments of your condition, and advice on selecting and prescribing muscle-building exercises, combined with the use of supplements, and possibly medication to stimulate muscle growth when needed.

To safely increase muscle mass, individuals should follow a training program, nutrition plan, supplements, and supportive medications as prescribed by a sports physician, specialist (if applicable), or trainer. Regular check-ups are necessary to monitor the muscle-building program and any side effects, allowing for appropriate adjustments and timely treatment of any adverse reactions.
