Enhancing technological connectivity

The first China-ASEAN Science and Technology Trade and Investment Consultative Conference was recently held in Beijing, within the framework of the 26th Beijing International Science and Technology Expo (July 13-16 in Beijing).

Enhancing technological connectivity

The conference brought together government and ministerial leaders from five ASEAN countries (Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam) to share and exchange ideas, seek development opportunities in Southeast Asia, and strengthen the technological ecosystem connections between China and ASEAN countries.

ASEAN is one of Beijing's major trading partners. In 2023, China-ASEAN trade volume was approximately US$34.9 billion, ranking behind the European Union (EU) and the United States.

The Beijing Municipal Government stated that Beijing possesses extensive advantages in areas such as smart manufacturing, new energy, and medicine; and wishes to strengthen industrial connections with ASEAN countries, promoting deeper integration between the two sides in industrial chains, supply chains, and value chains; while also working together to build an internationally competitive industrial cluster.

Amidst the ongoing US-China technological competition, China recognizes the importance of global partnerships and has shifted its focus to other countries through its "neighborly diplomacy " policy.

ASEAN has emerged as a crucial strategic partner for China. ASEAN's geographical and cultural proximity to China, its growing population, and its vibrant economy are key characteristics that make the bloc attractive to China.

Furthermore, since 2013, with the launch of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which serves as the foundation for China's global expansion, the country has prioritized Southeast Asia and fostered closer ties with the region.

Subsequently, the Digital Silk Road, as an extension of the BRI, represents China's vision to extend its technological and digital power beyond its borders, with a specific focus on Southeast Asia.
