Enhance technology connectivity

The first China-ASEAN Science and Technology Trade and Investment Consultation Conference was recently held in Beijing, within the framework of the 26th Beijing International Science and Technology Industry Expo (July 13-16 in Beijing).

The conference brought together government leaders and ministries from five ASEAN countries (Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam) to share and exchange ideas, seek development opportunities in Southeast Asian countries and strengthen the connection of the technology ecosystem between China and ASEAN countries.

ASEAN is one of Beijing's major trading partners. In 2023, China-ASEAN import and export turnover was about 34.9 billion USD, after the European Union (EU) and the United States.

Beijing has extensive advantages in the fields of smart manufacturing, new energy, medicine, etc.; it wishes to strengthen industrial connectivity with ASEAN countries, promote deep integration between the two sides in the fields of industrial chains, supply chains, value chains, etc.; and at the same time, coordinate to build an industrial cluster with international competitiveness.

Amid the ongoing US-China technological competition, China has recognized the importance of global partnerships and has shifted its focus to countries, through its “neighborly diplomacy” policy.

ASEAN has emerged as an important strategic partner for China. ASEAN’s geographical and cultural proximity to China, its growing population and vibrant economy are key features that make the bloc attractive to China.

Moreover, since 2013, with the launch of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which is the foundation for China's global outreach, the country has prioritized Southeast Asia and promoted closer ties.

The Digital Silk Road, then, as an extension of the BRI, represents China’s vision to extend its technological and digital prowess beyond its borders, with a particular focus on Southeast Asia.
