Training on sustainable rice farming practices.
The training session at the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center was chaired by Mr. Ngo Thai Son - Deputy Director in charge of the Center; representatives from the technical departments; and members of the Rice Development Steering Committee. Attending the online training were Professor Dr. Nguyen Bao Ve - Can Tho University, representatives from key rice-growing districts of the province including Tuy Phong, Bac Binh, Ham Thuan Bac, Tanh Linh, and Duc Linh; several community agricultural extension groups; cooperatives; and rice farmers in the localities.
At the training course, delegates received presentations from Professor Nguyen Bao Ve on sustainable rice cultivation processes, including tillering, effective tillering, and organic toxicity control for rice plants. Through this training, delegates, members of community agricultural extension groups, cooperatives, and rice farmers in the province were able to understand each stage of rice plant growth and development. This will enable them to effectively practice sustainable organic rice cultivation, maximizing yields and profits after each harvest, and contributing to improving the lives of farmers.
Binh Thuan province is known for its strong agricultural production. Currently, agriculture plays a very important role in the province's socio -economic development. However, in the past, rice cultivation in the province for many years focused on increasing productivity, leading to the overuse of inorganic fertilizers, chemical pesticides, burying straw in the fields, or burning fields... This increased the emission of greenhouse gases and water vapor. Therefore, sustainable organic rice cultivation, applying advanced technology and mechanization, is a new direction in agriculture. The aim is to reduce emissions of polluting gases and create conditions for Vietnam to participate in the carbon credit market in the future.
According to the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, sustainable organic rice cultivation must adhere to the correct procedures with the criteria of "1 must, 5 reductions": Using certified rice varieties; reducing the amount of seeds sown; reducing inorganic fertilizers; reducing the use of chemical pesticides; reducing irrigation water; and reducing post-harvest losses.
