– After the Lunar New Year, peach tree growers in the province are busy again with the work of collecting and caring for the ornamental peach trees.
Peach orchard owners in Lang Son city are tending to their ornamental peach trees after Tet (Lunar New Year).
The entire province currently has 470 hectares of peach orchards, with popular varieties such as: pink peach, light pink peach, seven-inch peach… Peach trees are grown in almost all districts and cities, with a concentration in Lang Son city and the districts of Bac Son, Huu Lung, and Van Quan…
In recent years, several families, organizations, and businesses have sought out peach orchards to rent peach trees for display during the Lunar New Year. After the holiday, these trees are returned to the orchard owners for care. Mr. Tran Van Nhiem, from Dai Thang Hamlet, Chi Lang Ward, Lang Son City, said: "My family currently has over 600 dwarf peach trees. For this variety, the older the tree, the greater its value. Therefore, instead of buying the trees outright, many families and businesses choose to rent them for the Lunar New Year. During the recent Year of the Dragon, in addition to selling trees, my family also rented out about 100 dwarf peach trees. The customers were mainly people in the province and some other provinces and cities such as Quang Ninh and Hanoi ... The rental price ranges from 700,000 VND to 5,000,000 VND per tree, depending on the size and shape of the tree. Currently, my family is collecting, removing flowers, pruning, and preparing the soil to replant the peach trees." Before the full moon of the first lunar month, the family will collect all the trees to restore and care for them again in preparation for the next year's Tet market.
Besides renting trees, some families and organizations choose to buy peach blossom trees outright to display during Tet (Lunar New Year). After Tet, the trees are sent back to the nursery for care at a certain cost. Mr. Nguyen Anh Dung, from Hung Loc commune, Vinh city, Nghe An province, said: "My family has a very old seven-petal peach blossom tree. I don't have the technical skills to care for it, and the local climate isn't suitable, so the leaves turn yellow and the flowers don't bloom at the right time for Tet. Therefore, for many years now, my family has moved the tree to a nursery in Lang Son city for care. Thanks to that, the peach blossom tree blooms beautifully and at the right time for Tet."
After the Lunar New Year, households and cooperatives growing peach trees in the province are busy with the work of restoring and caring for the trees. This work not only helps maintain the beauty of the peach trees for the new season but also helps increase income for the orchard owners.
Mr. Nguyen Van Quynh, from Hong Phong 1 village, Chien Thang commune, Bac Son district, said: "After Tet (Lunar New Year), due to lack of land for planting and insufficient technical knowledge, many families and businesses have sought out our nursery to entrust their peach trees for care. Depending on customer needs, our family will allocate a portion of our garden land to plant and care for these peach trees. After the trees are transported, I will proceed with removing flowers, pruning branches, shaping the canopy, etc. Depending on the growth and root damage, each peach tree will require different care. The cost of caring for peach trees usually ranges from 500,000 VND to 5,000,000 VND depending on the tree. To date, my family has taken care of more than 50 peach trees of various types."
Peach trees are a highly profitable crop. Besides restoring and caring for old peach trees, many orchard owners are now applying scientific and technical methods to propagate seedlings and plant new batches of trees.
Ms. Phung Thi Kim Khanh, Deputy Head of the Provincial Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, said: To ensure peach growers understand the technical process, the department regularly coordinates with relevant levels and sectors to organize training sessions for the people. In addition, the department advises the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to issue a technical procedure for planting and caring for ornamental peach trees in the province. Accordingly, the work of collecting peach tree stumps after Tet (Lunar New Year) is usually carried out by gardeners starting from the 10th day of the first lunar month and ending about 20 days later. The peach tree stumps transported to the garden must first be refreshed by placing them in the shade, trimming branches and leaves, and watering them. After a few days, they are planted in the ground and the root ball is removed… This helps the trees quickly take root and grow well.
With the expertise of the gardeners, the peach trees will be cared for using the right techniques, promising to bloom in time for next year's Tet holiday. This will contribute to beautifying the space of each family during the Tet and spring season.
