Ms. Nguyen Thi Duong, from Tan Na village, Van Nham commune, said: "Since 2015, I have been intercropping pink Cavendish bananas in my family's pomelo orchard. Thanks to this, each year, my family sells 300 to 400 bunches of bananas to traders. From November 2025 to the present, my family has harvested and sold about 250 bunches of bananas at prices ranging from 200,000 to 370,000 VND per bunch. Bananas are harvested at the end of the year, so the price is usually 40 to 50% higher than usual. Currently, my family is actively taking care of the remaining more than 200 bunches of bananas so they will be ready for Tet (Lunar New Year)."
Like Mrs. Duong's family, Mr. Nguyen Van Hieu's family in Dong Lai village, Huu Lung commune, is also busy tending their banana plantation. Mr. Hieu said: "Previously, my family mainly grew bananas for our own consumption. Recognizing the high demand for bananas during the Lunar New Year, since 2012, I have converted our less productive land to growing local Cavendish bananas. This year, my family has over 500 bunches of bananas to meet the demand for the 2026 Lunar New Year. To ensure the quality and appearance of the product, we have focused on careful care, wrapping the banana bunches and bracing them to prevent the heavy bunches from falling over the trees. Since the end of October (lunar calendar), all the banana bunches in the garden have been ordered by traders from several provinces and cities such as Hanoi and Hai Phong, at prices ranging from 180,000 to 300,000 VND per bunch." By growing Cavendish bananas to supply the market during the Lunar New Year, my family earns an additional income of 100 to 120 million VND each year.
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Tan, Head of the Economic Department of Huu Lung Commune, said: "In recent years, recognizing the high demand and price of bananas during Tet (Lunar New Year), some households in the commune have developed a commercial banana farming model. The entire commune currently has over 6.2 hectares of banana plantations, with an estimated yield of over 83 tons this year. At this time, people are busy tending to the trees to ensure the fruit is large, uniform, and visually appealing for the market. In the future, the department will continue to advise the Commune People's Committee to coordinate and organize training courses on scientific and technical transfer, including guiding people on the techniques of planting and caring for banana trees commercially. This will contribute to increasing productivity, quality, and income for the people."
It is known that in recent years, many households in the province have proactively switched to growing bananas commercially. Accordingly, around the second lunar month each year, people plant new banana trees or cultivate banana seedlings from old ones. Around the eighth lunar month, the banana trees will flower and bear fruit. To ensure the trees bear evenly shaped, round, and attractive fruit, growers must carefully care for them and ensure proper nutrition. Especially at the current stage of banana bunch development, growers must reinforce the tree trunk to reduce the risk of breakage. In addition, wrapping the banana bunches in plastic bags helps protect the fruit from sun damage and prevents insect and disease damage. Depending on weather conditions, the trees will yield fruit around the eleventh or twelfth lunar month.
According to statistics, the province currently has over 1,072 hectares of banana plantations, mainly Cavendish bananas and other local varieties; concentrated in communes such as Huu Lung, Van Nham, and Chi Lang... Banana yields reach over 10.9 tons/ha, with a total production of over 10,597 tons of fruit per year; the market extends not only within the province but also to other provinces and cities such as Hanoi and Bac Ninh ...
With proactive care and the application of appropriate farming techniques by the people, coupled with the high demand of the market, it is expected that this year's Tet banana crop will continue to be bountiful and fetch good prices. This will both meet the consumption needs of the people and provide a stable income for banana growers, thereby encouraging the expansion of this model.
