Understanding market demand, flower growers in La Gi town have selected flower varieties suitable for the local climate and soil to supply the Tet flower market this year. Flowers such as orchids, chrysanthemums, marigolds, cockscomb, poinsettias, and anthuriums are among the most commonly grown for Tet. Depending on the growth and development time of each flower variety, growers choose the appropriate planting time to ensure the plants bloom in time for Tet.

Owning over 200 orchid pots of various sizes, Ms. Dinh Thi Thu Nga in Tan Ly 1 village, Tan Binh commune, La Gi town, is currently busy tending to and watering her family's orchid garden. According to Ms. Nga, in recent years, the profits from selling orchids have been quite high because orchids are always popular in the market. A single orchid stem usually costs from tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of dong to several million dong... Orchids are usually arranged in pots, each pot having a different price depending on the number and variety, suitable for the budget of each flower enthusiast. According to our observations, Ms. Nga's orchid garden is quite diverse in varieties such as: Phalaenopsis, Cymbidium, Dendrobium, and Vanda...

Ms. Nga always meticulously waters and fertilizes her family's orchid garden.

Ms. Nga shared: “During the period leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year), with the current sunny and windy weather, growers must diligently water the orchids to prevent dehydration. An important factor is timing the flowering so that the plants bloom precisely during Tet. At the same time, it's crucial to regularly observe the plants for any diseases, especially insects that damage leaves and buds, or diseases like soft rot that can cause the plant to decay. Furthermore, regular fertilization is essential for healthy growth, strong buds, and beautiful flowers.”

With over 20 years of experience growing marigolds and cockscomb flowers, every year in November of the lunar calendar, Ms. Nguyen Thi Can in Phuoc Tien village, Tan Phuoc commune, La Gi town, plants more than 2,000 pots of marigolds and over 1,000 pots of cockscomb flowers to supply the Tet (Lunar New Year) flower market. Ms. Can said that these two types of flowers are quite easy to grow and care for, but bring in a relatively high income. On average, each year during Tet, when growing these two types of flowers, she earns a profit of 25-30 million VND.

Marigolds – a very popular flower during the Lunar New Year season – represent longevity, good fortune, and filial piety. Therefore, in the last months of the year, many farming households, like Mrs. Nguyen Thi Can's family, actively cultivate this flower. Besides the vibrant yellow and orange marigolds, the deep red cockscomb flowers are also equally popular during Tet (Lunar New Year) because, according to feng shui, cockscomb flowers symbolize good luck and wealth for the homeowner. Furthermore, this flower represents nobility and a willingness to sacrifice for others.
