Moving the capital is time-consuming and expensive, and would significantly shift a country’s cultural identity, which is why President Masoud Pezeshkian is facing questions from politicians and others in Iran about the plan.

The plan comes as Iran's economy faces pressure after a long period of Western sanctions, and the value of the rial fell to a historic low in December 2024.

Capital for more than 200 years

Tehran became the capital of Iran more than 200 years ago under the reign of the founding emperor Āghā Moḥammad Khān of the Qājār dynasty.

The idea of moving the capital elsewhere was first mentioned during the presidency of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the 2000s. After taking office, President Pezeshkian once again raised the proposal to address the problems Tehran is currently facing such as overpopulation, water scarcity, power shortages and other challenges.

Although the idea was discussed earlier, the implementation plan was never actually implemented due to financial shortages and political disputes.

Iran International quoted Iranian government spokesman Fatemeh Mohajerani as saying that "the country's new capital will definitely be located in the south, in the Makran region, and this issue is being promoted."

She added that President Pezeshkian's administration is seeking the support of scholars, elites and experts, including engineers, sociologists and economists.

The spokesman said the capital relocation project is in the exploratory stage.
