Sharing difficulties

One morning in early February 2026, the atmosphere of Tet ( Vietnamese New Year) arrived earlier than usual within the grounds of Hai Duong Children's Hospital. Dozens of gifts, prepared by a family from An Phu commune in coordination with the hospital's Social Work Team, were handed directly to underprivileged children with serious illnesses and long-term treatments, bringing simple yet warm joy amidst an environment accustomed to the noise of machines and the smell of disinfectant.

Among the child patients who received gifts that day was V. Th. AL, who is being treated in the General Internal Medicine Department. She suffers from nephrotic syndrome, and her family is in extremely difficult circumstances. Upon receiving a Tet gift worth 250,000 VND in cash, her grandfather emotionally shared: “This small gift not only brings joy to our family during Tet but also encourages her to focus on her treatment.”

Also during this Tet holiday, at Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital, the Living and Sharing Volunteer Group ( Hai Phong ) continued its journey of connecting with love. The group presented 15 Tet gift packages to poor patients in the Oncology Department and the Endocrinology - Urology Department, each package including cash and essential goods. In particular, the group donated 14 million VND to support the hospital fees for VMD (born in 2008), who suffers from Thalassemia (congenital hemolytic anemia).

D. was born into a family where both parents carry the gene for the disease. From the age of 4, she was frequently hospitalized for blood transfusions and monitoring for complications. Her health deteriorated, forcing her to drop out of school in the 7th grade. Her parents are low-income workers who also have to care for two younger siblings and her grandmother, who suffers from a long-term heart condition. The mounting medical expenses exceeded their means, pushing the family into a desperate situation. The timely support during the days leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year) not only eased the family's financial burden but also provided emotional support and hope for D. to continue her arduous treatment journey.

Warmth and affection

Beyond just direct gifts, many humanitarian initiatives have been implemented in hospitals, contributing to sharing and empathizing with impoverished patients. At Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital, the "Zero-Cost Tet Supermarket - Sharing Love" program left a lasting impression. In this special "supermarket," there were no price tags, no bargaining, only neatly arranged bags of rice, bottles of cooking oil, cartons of milk, and packets of instant noodles. Patients visiting the market could personally select the necessary items for their families. Respect and understanding were prioritized, ensuring each patient felt cared for and supported. Amidst the hustle and bustle of the year-end, Tet arrived earlier at Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital – through silent acts of kindness, compassion, and warm hands reaching out to each other during the most difficult times.

Understanding and empathizing with patients in difficult circumstances, every Lunar New Year, Hai Phong Lung Hospital organizes the "Compassionate Spring - Loving Tet" program for inpatients. Within the framework of the program, hospital leaders and benefactors directly visit and present Tet gifts to patients in need. These gifts, though not large in material value, contain genuine affection and care, demonstrating the support and love from the community and the hospital. Simple handshakes and New Year wishes bring the warmth of spring to each ward, helping patients feel more confident in their treatment.

At Hai Phong Mental Health Hospital, caring for patients during Tet (Lunar New Year) has become a beautiful annual tradition. Throughout the year, many organizations, individuals, and even hospital staff regularly support free meals for patients, contributing to sharing the difficulties faced by those in need. Especially during the Lunar New Year, the atmosphere at the hospital becomes warmer as many charitable groups visit, donating Tet meals and gifts to patients in particularly difficult circumstances. These simple gifts, though modest, contain the sincere affection and concern of the community. The hospital leadership also gives each patient 100,000 VND on the morning of the first day of Tet. The moment of receiving the lucky money at the beginning of the year has special spiritual significance, helping patients to be further motivated to celebrate Tet and welcome the New Year with the community.

A family from An Phu commune (Hai Phong) donated gifts to underprivileged child patients at Hai Duong Children's Hospital on the occasion of the 2026 Lunar New Year.

Speaking about the significance of giving Tet gifts to poor patients, Mr. Nguyen Huu Vinh, Head of the General Planning Department at Hai Duong Children's Hospital, shared: "In the atmosphere of the traditional Tet holiday, giving gifts to poor patients carries even deeper humanitarian significance. For many families with children undergoing long-term treatment, Tet is incomplete due to worries about illness and expenses. Although the gifts are not large, they are a very practical source of encouragement, helping patients and their families feel the care of the community."

Lunar New Year is traditionally a time for family reunions, but for many impoverished patients, it's a time filled with worries. Therefore, charitable programs and quiet acts of kindness at hospitals during Tet not only provide material support but, more importantly, warm hearts and spread the spirit of mutual support – ensuring that Tet in the hospital remains Tet, a warm, meaningful, and hopeful celebration.
