Herrera made a minimal contribution to Boca. |
Joining Boca Juniors earlier this year as a big star, having previously played for Bilbao, Manchester United, and PSG, Herrera was expected to bring class, experience, and balance to the midfield of the La Bombonera team. However, what happened afterward was the opposite of expectations.
In his very second match for Boca Juniors against Argentinos Juniors, Herrera suffered a hamstring injury and was forced to leave the field early. This injury kept him out of action for almost a month.
From that point on, the nightmare of injuries relentlessly plagued the Spanish midfielder. Another muscle injury kept him sidelined for an extended period, from April until September, disrupting his reintegration and attempts to regain his form.
Towards the end of the season, with Boca Juniors only having the Clausura to salvage a disappointing year, Herrera had virtually no significant role left. In the last 10 matches, he only started once, playing a total of 196 minutes.

Herrera has been a disappointment at Boca. |
The statistics only make Herrera's future more uncertain. Throughout the season, he only featured in 19 matches, starting 8 times, and missed 23 games due to injury.
In terms of professional contribution, Herrera has yet to score a goal, provide an assist, and even received a red card—a performance clearly not living up to initial expectations.
Herrera's contract with Boca Juniors expires next December. Currently, the 35-year-old midfielder is back in Spain with his family. Given the current circumstances, the chances of Herrera being retained at Boca are not high.
