On July 3rd, the founding congress of the Hanoi Cancer Society, term 2026-2031, was held with the participation of leaders from the Ministry of Health , the Hanoi Department of Health, the Hanoi Department of Internal Affairs, representatives of the Vietnam Cancer Society, the Hanoi Medical Association, leaders of many central hospitals, public and private hospitals, medical universities, research institutes, along with a large number of experts, doctors, nurses, technicians and scientists working in the field of oncology.

The establishment of the Hanoi Cancer Society aims to bring together experts, medical staff, scientists , and organizations working in the field of cancer, creating a forum for professional networking, promoting scientific research, training, technology transfer, and strengthening cooperation, contributing to improving the quality of cancer prevention and control in the capital city.
According to GLOBOCAN 2022 data from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), Vietnam recorded approximately 180,480 new cancer cases and 120,184 cancer-related deaths in 2022. Currently, more than 409,000 people are living with the disease within 5 years of diagnosis. Cancer continues to be one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality, requiring enhanced professional capacity, accelerated scientific research, standardized treatment quality, and expanded cooperation in the field of oncology.
As the country's major medical center, Hanoi boasts numerous specialized hospitals, medical training facilities, and leading experts in oncology. In the context of increasing healthcare needs and the rapid development of modern medicine, the formation of a specialized organization is expected to enhance coordination among medical facilities, promote academic activities, scientific research, and policy advice, thereby contributing to improved effectiveness in cancer prevention and control.
The congress also marked the establishment of Hanoi's first socio-professional organization specializing in the field of oncology, opening a new phase in the development of professional networks, human resource training, scientific research, and the application of advanced techniques in the diagnosis and treatment of the disease.
At the Congress, delegates announced the Decision of the Hanoi City People's Committee on allowing the establishment of the Hanoi City Cancer Association; approved the Association's Charter; elected the Executive Committee and the Inspection Committee for the first term, 2026-2031; introduced the first Executive Committee; and approved the work program for the entire term and the Congress Resolution.
The congress elected the first Standing Committee of the Hanoi Cancer Association, consisting of 9 members. Dr. Bui Vinh Quang, Director of Hanoi Oncology Hospital, was entrusted with the position of President of the Association.

The six Vice Presidents include Dr. Mai Trong Hung, Director of Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital; Dr. Nguyen Thanh Vinh, Director of Ha Dong General Hospital; Dr. Nguyen Van Thuong, Director of Thanh Nhan Hospital; Dr. Vu Kien, Deputy Director of Hanoi Oncology Hospital; Dr. Nguyen Thi Mai Lan, Deputy Director of Hanoi Oncology Hospital; and Dr. Le Van Thanh, Deputy Director of Hanoi Oncology Hospital. The two Standing Committee members are Dr. Cao Duc Chinh, Director of Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital, and Dr. Do Minh Tri, Deputy Director of Duc Giang General Hospital.
According to its Charter, the Hanoi Cancer Society is a voluntary socio-professional organization of individuals and organizations working in the field of cancer in the city. The Society aims to build a united professional community, develop the capabilities of medical staff, promote training, scientific research, and the development of specialized techniques, strengthen domestic and international cooperation, and advise the Hanoi Department of Health and the Hanoi People's Committee on strategies for the development of the oncology specialty.

During its first term, the Association will focus on building a network connecting cancer treatment facilities in the city; organizing continuous training programs, conferences, seminars, and scientific activities; promoting scientific research, technology transfer, and updating medical advancements; expanding cooperation with organizations, associations, and experts both domestically and internationally; strengthening communication and health education to raise community awareness about cancer prevention and control; and participating in advising, reviewing, and proposing policies for the development of the oncology specialty in the capital city.
The establishment of the Hanoi Cancer Society is expected to create an important foundation for forming a cohesive professional network, promoting innovation in cancer research and treatment, improving the quality of medical examination, treatment and patient care, and contributing to the protection, care and improvement of the health of the people of Hanoi.
