Today, Ho Chi Minh City solemnly celebrates the 50th anniversary of the day Saigon-Gia Dinh City was honored to be named after President Ho Chi Minh (July 2, 1976 - July 2, 2026). Over the past half-century, this great honor has become an intrinsic strength, a driving force for the city to overcome all obstacles, to be dynamic and pioneering in development, and to join the rest of the country in writing the glorious history of the nation.

From a city that had just emerged from war and faced countless difficulties, the city named after him has now become the economic engine of the country, the driving force of the southern key economic region, and plays a leading role in the industrialization and modernization process of Vietnam.

Half a century of progress

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the renaming of Saigon-Gia Dinh to Ho Chi Minh City, the city has launched eight projects that promise to become new drivers of development.

Prominent among these is the Nha Rong-Khanh Hoi Cultural Park and Bach Dang Wharf Public Greenery Project, comprising five sub-projects. Upon completion, the project will create a new green space along the Saigon River, where the historical story of young Nguyen Tat Thanh's journey to find a way to save the country on the ship Amiral Latouche Tréville will be retold to present and future generations in a more visual and vivid way.

This area is not only a highlight of Ho Chi Minh's cultural space but also symbolizes the pioneering spirit, dynamism, creativity, and aspiration to reach out to the wider world of the people of Saigon-Ho Chi Minh City.

Ms. Vu Thuy Hoa, 70 years old, residing in Ward 30, Duc Nhuan Commune, shared that she has lived in Ho Chi Minh City for 50 years and is always proud to witness the city becoming more spacious and beautiful.

In particular, upon learning that the Nha Rong Wharf area (now the Ho Chi Minh Museum, Ho Chi Minh City branch), a significant historical site in the city, was being renovated and expanded, the former female Trường Sơn soldier felt extremely happy.

For Ms. Hoa, this is a popular and meaningful initiative, especially at a time when the city is celebrating the 50th anniversary of being named after President Ho Chi Minh.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the renaming of Saigon-Gia Dinh to Ho Chi Minh City, the city has launched eight projects that promise to become new drivers of development.

In our discussions, Comrade Pham Chanh Truc, former Deputy Head of the Central Economic Committee, former Standing Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, and former Chairman of the People's Council of Ho Chi Minh City, often emphasized the tradition of dynamism and creativity that has become an inherent characteristic of the people of Saigon-Ho Chi Minh City.

And since the city was named after President Ho Chi Minh, that fine tradition has been strongly promoted by every official and citizen to live up to the city's name.

The city, once unwilling to tolerate shortages, sought to unleash production based on demand and capacity, removing barriers to trade and contributing to the building of a socialist-oriented market economy.

The city is a hub for promoting multi-sectoral and multi-ownership economic development, and it was one of the first to establish models of industrial parks, export processing zones, and stock exchanges…

With innovative approaches, the city has effectively implemented poverty alleviation programs and relocated housing along canals and waterways, most notably the Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe canal. The construction of the Quang Trung Software Center and the High-Tech Park demonstrates the city's pioneering spirit at every stage of its development.

The city has introduced many effective models and methods in managing, operating, and developing socio-economic activities, making a significant contribution to the country's reform efforts.

The profound affection that the city's people held for President Ho Chi Minh is a brilliant and outstanding mark in the process of building the city into an economic powerhouse, a major center for trade, services, finance, science and technology, education and training, and innovation for the whole country.

Following the restructuring of the political system through mergers with Binh Duong and Ba Ria-Vung Tau provinces, Ho Chi Minh City now has the scale of a megacity. After nearly a year of operation, the city has gradually stabilized its organizational structure and achieved many positive results in socio-economic development.

In the context of the country entering a new era of development, building Ho Chi Minh City into a hub of national excellence, the source of many innovative initiatives and aspirations for progress, carries both long-term strategic significance and reflects the responsibility of the city's people towards the expectations and trust of the entire nation for the city named after the beloved President Ho Chi Minh.

His name will shine forever.

During the war of national liberation, Saigon was the starting point for Southern Vietnam to raise the banner of resistance against foreign invaders. Saigon was also the place where the two protracted wars of resistance for the independence, freedom, and unification of the Fatherland ended.

The spirit of "leading the way, following behind" in the war of national defense continues to be upheld by Saigon-Ho Chi Minh City in the process of national construction and development in the era of national progress, with the determination to "lead the way and reach the finish line first".
