Digital transformation in journalism, in short, is the integration of digital technology into newsroom operations, from production and distribution to content delivery on digital platforms. This is not simply about digitizing documents, but also about changing the operating model, management mindset, digital newsroom organization, and interaction methods to create an optimal reader experience in the digital age.
Digital transformation in journalism aims to build professional, humane, and modern media organizations; to effectively fulfill the mission of information and propaganda serving the Party's revolutionary cause and the country's reform; to ensure the leading role in guiding public opinion and maintaining information sovereignty in cyberspace; to innovate the reader experience; to create new revenue streams; and to promote the development of the digital content industry.
In this era of rapid technological development, not only must media organizations innovate their operating methods, but each journalist also needs to proactively adapt to the digital environment, constantly learning and improving their multimedia journalism skills. As information spreads faster and more complexly, the role of journalists becomes increasingly important in ensuring accuracy, objectivity, and guiding public opinion. Digital transformation is not just about using new technologies, but also about a change in journalistic thinking. This requires journalists to be proficient in digital skills, know how to exploit data, verify information online, and use artificial intelligence (AI) effectively and responsibly.
In recent years, Hue's press has invested early in technological infrastructure, gradually promoting digital transformation and improving the quality of both content and format to better serve the needs of the public. Today's Hue newspaper not only fulfills its information and propaganda mission but also builds a multi-platform ecosystem, spreading positive values in society. Besides its familiar sections, Hue Today newspaper is developing short videos, infographics, podcasts, and social media platforms. Currently, the Hue Today Facebook fanpage (Vietnamese version) regularly updates local news, economic , cultural, and social information; while the Hue News fanpage (English version) contributes to promoting the image, culture, and tourism of Hue to international readers.
The establishment of Hue Newspaper & Radio & Television Station, based on the merger of Hue Newspaper Today and Hue City Radio & Television Station (from July 1, 2025), opens up new opportunities for Hue city's press and journalists to accelerate digital transformation to meet the increasingly high demands for information and entertainment from the public.
According to the results of the 2025 assessment of the maturity level of "Digital Transformation in Journalism" conducted by the Press Department of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Hue City's press achieved a fairly good level, ranking among local press agencies. This result leaves some "concerns" for journalists in Hue, but also shows that there is still significant "room" for digital transformation in Hue City's press and for journalists there. In the coming time, press agencies and journalists in the area will continue to overcome many difficulties and challenges, promoting digital transformation according to the "Digital Transformation in Journalism to 2025, with a vision to 2030" strategy approved by the Prime Minister.
Digital transformation opens up many opportunities but also poses numerous challenges for journalism. This requires media organizations and journalists in Hue to constantly learn, innovate their thinking, accelerate digital transformation, improve multimedia journalism skills, meet the increasingly high demands of the public, and contribute to building a professional, humane, and modern press.
