Early morning of May 16, the State Bank announced the central exchange rate of the Vietnamese Dong to the USD increased by 12 VND, reaching 23,652 VND.

Meanwhile, in the US market, the US Dollar Index (DXY) measuring the greenback's fluctuations against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF) decreased by 0.26% to 102.42.

The US dollar fell from a five-week high in the previous session, as investors awaited news from Washington on resolving the debt ceiling issue.

The greenback fell early after data showed the New York Federal Reserve’s Empire State manufacturing index fell to -31.8 this month from 10.8 in April, the biggest decline since April 2020 and the lowest since it hit a three-year low of -32.9 in January.

The Empire State Manufacturing Index measures the relative level of overall business conditions in New York State. A reading greater than 0.0 indicates conditions are improving, while a reading less than 0.0 indicates conditions are worsening.

“The market is in wait-and-see mode for clearer signals from Washington on the US debt default,” said Amo Sahota, director of foreign exchange consultancy Klarity FX in San Francisco.

President Joe Biden is scheduled to meet with congressional leaders on Thursday, May 16, before he leaves for a Group of Seven meeting in Japan. Earlier, US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy warned that there was still no progress toward a deal to lift the $31.4 trillion debt ceiling in negotiations with the White House.

In contrast, the euro rose 0.2% against the greenback, currently at $1.087. Against the Japanese yen, the dollar rose 0.3%, currently at 136.06.
