Three military officers are about to be assigned to United Nations peacekeeping missions in Central Africa, South Sudan, and the Abyei region, according to a decision by the President of the country .

On April 8th, the Ministry of National Defence held a ceremony to present the President's appointment decisions to three officers. Among them, Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Sy Hieu will assume the position of Military Observer at the MINUSCA Mission (Central African Republic); Major Nguyen Thi Thanh Loan will become a Logistics Staff Officer at the UNISFA Mission (Abyei region); and Senior Lieutenant Nguyen Tien Long will become a Military Observer at the UNMISS Mission (Republic of South Sudan).

According to the Department of Peacekeeping , the three officers completed the Peacekeeping Force Capability Assessment Exercise (CEPPP 2023) and the bilateral peacekeeping exercise with India (VINBAX 2023). They also underwent pre-deployment training, ensuring they meet mission requirements upon arrival in the area.

Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien, Deputy Minister of National Defence, expressed his hope that the three officers would demonstrate their capabilities and professional competence, ensuring the security and safety of personnel, weapons, and equipment. The Department of Peacekeeping Operations needs to improve foreign language skills and continue researching candidates for positions at the United Nations Headquarters and command roles in peacekeeping missions.

To date, Vietnam has sent 799 officers and staff to participate in peacekeeping operations at three UN missions and headquarters.

The MINUSCA mission in the Central African Republic was established in April 2014 with the mission of protecting civilians and supporting the transition of power in Central Africa amidst the activities of various armed groups.

The UNMISS mission in the Republic of South Sudan is the largest United Nations peacekeeping mission with nearly 18,000 personnel. South Sudan is grappling with violence, natural disasters, economic instability, and political and military conflict.

Abyei, covering an area of 10,546 km2, is a disputed territory between Sudan and South Sudan following the 2005 civil war. The UNISFA mission was established there to maintain security and safety and to prevent conflict and disputes between the two countries.
