The Ha Ri brocade weaving village in Ha Ri hamlet, Vinh Hiep commune, Vinh Thanh district (Binh Dinh province) has recently been recognized by the Binh Dinh Provincial People's Committee as meeting the standards of a traditional craft village, as stipulated in Clause 3, Article 5 of Government Decree No. 52/2018-ND/CP on the development of rural industries. This is good news and a new "breath of life" that will help the local brocade weaving craft overcome difficulties and challenges, seize opportunities to sustainably maintain and maximize its inherent value and identity.

Efforts to preserve

The traditional brocade weaving craft of Ha Ri has a long history, preserved and passed down through many generations. Currently, 36 households in the village practice this craft. Ha Ri woven products include many items, but the most familiar are men's shirts, men's loincloths, women's blouses, and women's skirts... mainly used in cultural and artistic performances (dancing, singing, traditional festivals).

According to Ms. Dinh Thi Choai, one of the most experienced weavers, brocade weaving involves many different stages such as yarn spinning, dyeing, and hand weaving.

These processes require dedication, patience, meticulousness, and effort from the worker. Sometimes it can take up to half a month to create a complete and satisfactory product.

According to Ms. Choai, the brocade weaving technique of the Bana Kriem people is relatively similar to that of some other ethnic groups such as the Cham and H're. However, the patterns and decorative motifs have many differences.

The difference lies in the fact that Bana people's brocade uses many geometric patterns with straight lines, curves, and triangles. The patterns are usually tiny lines overlapping to form a complex band around a main decorative motif: an eight-pointed star woven on a white background.

Ms. Choai added that the Bana people choose black as the main color in their brocade costumes, combined with red, white, and a touch of yellow and light green, creating a striking and powerful look thanks to the high contrast.

The artisans require exceptional imagination and creativity. Therefore, the textile products are not simply everyday items, but deeply embody a unique identity, a worldview , and a meaningful story about the culture and customs of the Bana Kriem people.

However, with the rapid development of modern society, the traditional brocade weaving craft of Ha Ri is facing many difficulties and challenges, even the risk of disappearing and being lost. This reality deeply concerns people like Mrs. Choai, who are determined to find ways to preserve the craft.

Following the sound of the loom, we arrived at the home of Mrs. Dinh Thi Duoi, who was busy weaving brocade after working in the fields. Mrs. Duoi confided, "Even if the products don't sell, I still have to continue. With such intense love and passion, we can't turn a blind eye. We must find ways and take concrete actions to contribute to maintaining, preserving, and promoting this traditional craft."

"I'm willing to 'guide and instruct' the young people in the village so they understand the craft. From there, we can create a team of successors, working together to revive the traditional craft passed down from our ancestors," Mrs. Duoi expressed.

New opportunities for traditional craft villages.

In late March, the people of Ha Ri village were overjoyed to hear that their traditional brocade weaving craft had been recognized as a standard craft village by the People's Committee of Binh Dinh province.

From now on, Ha Ri brocade weaving will benefit from support policies under Decision No. 40/2019/QD-UBND of the Provincial People's Committee, which stipulates policies to support the development of craft villages and rural industries in the province for the period 2019-2025, and related policies. This is like a new "breath of life," an important stepping stone to help the craft village stand firm in the face of changing times, the major changes in the market, and consumer demand.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tu, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Vinh Hiep commune, shared that being recognized as a traditional craft village will help households engaged in the craft feel more secure and motivated to stay committed, gradually improving the quality and economic value of their brocade weaving products.

Local authorities are committed to supporting the promotion and market research of traditional craft villages, while also linking them with tourism development to create stable income and improve the lives of local residents.

According to Le Minh Thong, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Vinh Thanh District, in implementing the action program of the Provincial Party Committee and the plan of the Provincial People's Committee, the district has simultaneously implemented many effective solutions related to the preservation and development of traditional craft villages in the district.

Alongside the proposal for recognition as a traditional craft village, the district has also developed and finalized a plan for the preservation and development of this craft village. Currently, the plan is being reviewed by relevant authorities before being submitted to the Provincial People's Committee for approval. A highlight of the plan is its emphasis on preserving the long-standing historical values of the craft village, as well as policies for training and educating ethnic minority communities.

Ms. Huynh Thi Anh Thao, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Binh Dinh province, assessed that this is a great honor and source of pride for the Bana Kriem people. With the recognition of the craft village, the locality will receive attention and support for investment in building a systematic infrastructure. Furthermore, artisans and practitioners will have the opportunity to participate in teaching and practicing the secrets of the craft related to brocade weaving.

Ms. Huynh Thi Anh Thao further informed that, in the past period, the Department has coordinated with relevant departments and agencies, and the People's Committee of Vinh Thanh district to implement many unique activities such as organizing classes to teach brocade weaving to local people and students; establishing brocade weaving clubs; and building several multi-purpose houses - serving as both places for people to practice their craft and places to exchange, promote, and sell brocade weaving products to tourists. The Department also aims to accelerate the inventory of intangible cultural heritage of ethnic minorities in the province; including the brocade weaving craft of the Bana Kriem people in Vinh Thanh district.

"After the inventory, the Department will review and select a number of typical intangible cultural heritage items to propose to the provincial leadership to build scientific dossiers, and submit them to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism for inclusion in the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage," Ms. Thao said.
