Shedding their old, restrictive clothes, these "destinations" are attracting the attention and interest of many tourists seeking out new looks.
Under the roof of Bh'noong
Phuoc Son is shaping the urban landscape of Kham Duc town into a young city with great potential for economic , cultural, and tourism development. The expansion in scale is gradually becoming apparent in each stage of the local development, specifically in both directions: towards Kham Duc airport and Autumn Lake.
According to Mr. Do Hoai Xoan, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Phuoc Son district, in addition to expanding the administrative space in Kham Duc, the goal is to form two urban areas by 2030.
This also contributes to creating a hub for trade connections between the locality and neighboring western districts and the Central Highlands provinces... Kham Duc becoming a type 4 urban area and Phuoc Hiep commune becoming a type 5 urban area is the aspiration of the people in the mountainous region in the new development planning phase.
"Previously, due to numerous construction projects, especially the historical site of Kham Duc Airport, expanding the planned urban development area faced many difficulties."
"Based on the local development needs and an assessment of potential and advantages, in recent years, in addition to investing in infrastructure development, we have strived to expand the urban scale, especially the Khâm Đức town area towards the northeast of the district, gradually 'expanding' the old space, aiming to form a central urban area along the Ho Chi Minh Highway," Mr. Xoan said.

In 2023, Kham Duc was chosen to host the 20th Quang Nam Mountain Districts' Culture, Sports and Tourism Festival. In the side stories, many people believe this event is Phuoc Son's way of "experimenting" with the operation of its new urban space, after a period of expanded investment.
Kham Duc Airport has been renovated into a central stadium, the largest in the Eastern Truong Son region. Autumn Lake, with its traditional village atmosphere retaining its pure ancient charm, is combined with a rational arrangement of residential areas in line with modern trends.
Numerous cultural activities take place throughout the festival. The Bh'noong Cultural Preservation Area becomes an ideal destination for many tourists as well as local people. Under the village roof, layers of culture are skillfully selected and displayed, creating an unforgettable impression for visitors.
Standing amidst the vast forest
The other day, we stopped in Prao – the "Chò tree" town of the Cơ Tu ethnic group in Đông Giang district. After years of struggling with the problem of upgrading, at the end of 2023, the local authorities decided to expand the area, creating open spaces, from a planning perspective to the arrangement of the population.
The hills on the uphill slopes along National Highway 14G have been leveled, creating a new land area with great potential for a future urban landscape.
Previously, Dong Giang also expanded its roads southward, along the A Vuong River. Many infrastructure projects were invested in and upgraded, contributing to the town's new appearance.

However, compared to the criteria for a type 5 urban area, Prao is still considered a "poor" town in terms of its structure, level of socio-economic development, population density, as well as infrastructure, architecture, and urban landscape.
According to Mr. Do Tai, Secretary of the Dong Giang District Party Committee, the locality is focusing on resolving difficulties related to fulfilling the criteria for a type 5 urban area for Prao town.
Besides investing in infrastructure, urban beautification, and attracting investment in service and tourism development, the locality prioritizes the construction and improvement of transportation systems, street lighting, and urban green space density…
At the same time, Dong Giang continues to review and adjust the general construction plan (1/5,000), gradually renovating Prao urban area to conform with the development orientation of a type 5 urban area in the future.
In the western mountains of the province, where the Ho Chi Minh Highway passes through, the ancient towns of the Co Tu, Bh'noong, Ve, and Ta Rieng ethnic groups are increasingly emerging alongside the overall development of the province.
Prao is undergoing a transformation with smart urban planning projects; Kham Duc is focused on preserving and promoting cultural identity; and Thanh My (Nam Giang) is oriented towards developing commercial infrastructure…
The towns along the legendary Truong Son mountain range, with their transformations yet preservation of their unique identities, are expected to contribute to the success of the "prosperous urban development" strategy in the mountainous regions...
