Flower consumption is very gloomy.
At Van Thanh flower village (Ward 5, Da Lat City) - a famous lily flower growing place, the flower market for the Lunar New Year 2024 is quite gloomy, many flower growers are worried about this year's Tet flower crop. Mr. Phan Van Quy - a lily grower with 10 years of experience, his family grows many popular lily varieties and has a distribution market throughout the country, but compared to previous years, he has only sold half of the flowers he is growing.
Mr. Phan Van Quy said that currently, lily flowers have the following prices: Double lilies, standard goods cost from 200,000 - 300,000 VND/vase of 5 branches, grade 1 lilies (5 ears) cost from 150,000 - 180,000 VND/vase of 5 branches, the remaining types of lilies usually cost from 80,000 - 100,000 VND/5 branches.
For potted lilies, depending on the type, the lowest price is 45,000 VND/pot (3 plants) and the highest is 170,000 VND/pot (5 plants), compared to last year, a decrease of 20,000 - 25,000 VND/pot.
Meanwhile, in Ha Dong flower village (Ward 8, Da Lat City), flower growers are concerned that this year's chrysanthemum consumption may not be as good as previous years. With more than 20 years of experience growing chrysanthemums, Mr. Vu Ngoc Tan said that this year, the price of flowers may not be as good as previous years, many people here have proactively reduced the area of Tet flower cultivation. Instead, flower growers focus on taking care of their gardens to ensure the best quality of flowers.
According to Ms. Nguyen Duc Thien Vu - Director of Quynh Phuong Da Lat Company Limited (Ward 5, Da Lat City), up to this point, the consumption of Da Lat flowers is very gloomy, farmers want to hold goods waiting for prices to increase, and purchasing sources are checking prices.
Most of the flowers are at low prices, not as expected by people, gerbera daisies are 80,000 VND/bunch of 20 branches; carnations are 60,000 VND/bunch of 20 branches; eco red roses are from 3,000 - 3,500 VND/branch, the rest of roses of other colors are only from 800 - 1,300 VND/branch; grade 1 gladiolus flowers are from 5,000 - 6,000 VND/branch,...
Gladiolus prices are about half of what they were in 2023.
According to flower growers in Da Lat, most flower growers in Da Lat City have reduced their flower growing area for Tet this year by 10-30%. Instead, flower growers are focusing on taking care of their flowers to achieve the best yield and quality in the hope that prices will increase near Tet.
In the days leading up to Lunar New Year, the price of gladiolus in Hiep An commune (Duc Trong district) - a key gladiolus growing area in Lam Dong province - is only about 35,000 VND/bunch. This price of gladiolus is only about half of the price of the 2023 Tet flower crop.
Currently, gardeners are urgently harvesting to transport flowers to supply the Tet market nationwide.
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Thoai - a flower grower in Dinh Anh village, Hiep An commune said that with 1,000m2, Mr. Thoai's family can grow about 25,000 gladiolus plants, harvesting about 20,000 plants. With the price of 30,000 - 40,000 VND/bunch, flower growers will earn about 7 million VND/sao after deducting all expenses.
Mr. Thoai explained that although the 2024 Tet flower crop will be a good one, the price is a bit low, and the price of fertilizer and labor is high. Therefore, flower growers will spend more on production costs.
Mr. Thai Binh Dong - Vice Chairman of Hiep An Commune People's Committee - said that the favorable weather conditions this year have made gladiolus cultivation more convenient, with higher quality and productivity. In the commune, there is currently a total area of 180 hectares of gladiolus cultivation, with an output of about 20,000 branches/sao.
However, this time is near Tet but the gladiolus market is quite quiet, currently the price of gladiolus fluctuates depending on the type, the lowest type is 20,000/bunch, the most beautiful type is only priced from 35,000 to 40,000 VND/bunch. Compared to the same period last year, the price of flowers this year is currently only half.
Mr. Nguyen Duc Cu - Head of the Economic Department of Da Lat City - said that in the 2023 - 2024 crop season, the total area for growing flowers of all kinds in the area is 834.4 hectares, with a total output of 193,223.4 thousand branches (the area increased by 89.4 hectares, the output increased by 33,127 thousand branches compared to the same period in 2023). Of which, chrysanthemums alone occupied an area of 325 hectares, with an output of 139,169 thousand branches.
According to Mr. Cu, due to the general economic difficulties, the flower market in Da Lat City is currently quiet, not as bustling as in previous years. Hopefully, in the next few days, flower prices will increase again so that flower growers in Da Lat City can celebrate the traditional New Year with more excitement.
