Many new compositions
Today's children are exposed to smartphones, social media, short videos, and many online entertainment products at an early age. Therefore, children's music should not only be entertaining but also contribute to shaping emotions, aesthetics, nurturing love for family and homeland, fostering a sense of living beautifully, and responsibility towards the community.
Therefore, in recent times, many musicians have paid more attention to this genre, exploring new ways of expression to suit young audiences. A prime example is musician Nguyen Van Chung, with his "collection" of 300 children's songs that he has focused on creating over many years.
Along with the efforts of individuals, the Ho Chi Minh City Music Association also organized many campaigns to compose children's songs, attracting the participation of many musicians. Hundreds of new works were created, focusing on themes such as love for homeland, family, school, environmental protection, gratitude, sharing, and love. The new songs also showed diversity in musical styles, from folk and traditional melodies to modern compositions that are close to the listening habits of children today.
Furthermore, in an effort to bring musical works to young audiences, the Ho Chi Minh City Music Association has organized a Children's Music Library on YouTube with over 300 songs that have been arranged, filmed, and recorded, and are available for free use in appropriate activities.
This digital music library has provided teachers, parents, performing arts groups, and children's groups with a new source of musical works to use.
Musician Nguyen Quang Vinh, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Music Association, shared: “The children's music library is built to serve the community, not for commercial purposes. However, in the case of commercial exploitation (ticketed performances, use on digital platforms generating revenue, etc.), specific discussions with the association are necessary to ensure copyright and related rights are protected.”
A mechanism for dissemination should be established soon.
However, the Ho Chi Minh City Music Association's Children's Music Library remains a small glimmer of hope. The dissemination of new compositions to child audiences is still limited. This includes the need for more engaging and appealing works, as well as the need to connect composition, communication, performance, education , and community cultural activities.
Composer Truong Quang Luc, one of the composers with many years of experience writing for children, said that composing for children is not as simple as many people think, because it requires both purity and an understanding of children's psychology and feelings.
"Children's songs should have beautiful, catchy, and appealing melodies, ideally with a folk feel, developed and enhanced, with a cheerful rhythm suitable for young children. The content needs to be easy to understand and appreciate, but not too monotonous or crude, because children today are much more knowledgeable and sensitive than we were in the past," shared musician Truong Quang Luc.
Meanwhile, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thi My Liem, Vice President of the Ho Chi Minh City Music Association, also raised the issue of the diversity of music for children: "Newly written music for children currently mainly consists of songs. Other forms such as instrumental music for children to learn musical instruments, choral music, musical theater, Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera), and traditional folk songs are almost absent."
Based on this reality, musician Nguyen Quang Vinh commented: "Although there are many compositions for children, very few are truly engaging and memorable for listeners. Regarding composition, there's a tendency for established artists to repeat themselves, while new artists compose less, or if they do, it's usually on commission. Popularization also faces many obstacles as schools and children's centers are hesitant to use new works, only using old songs, which lack appeal to young audiences..."
Currently, the Ho Chi Minh City Music Association is proposing that relevant agencies and departments in Ho Chi Minh City soon develop specific, long-term mechanisms, policies, and strategies to promote children's music in social life.
According to musicians, children's music needs comprehensive investment, from composition to dissemination, so that truly valuable works reach children. With coordination between musicians, schools, cultural organizations, and appropriate support mechanisms, new songs will have the opportunity to be widely used, contributing to a rich, healthy, and diverse spiritual life for children.
