According to the source, the new hypersonic variant of the missile can reach speeds of Mach 5.5, putting Turkey in the group of countries possessing leading hypersonic missile technology. These missiles, capable of traveling faster than Mach 5, are considered a game-changer in modern warfare as they are difficult to detect and intercept due to their superior speed and maneuverability.
The development of the Tayfun hypersonic missile underlines Türkiye’s ambition to strengthen its strategic and defensive capabilities. Missile technology has long been a pillar of the country’s defense policy, and hypersonic capabilities represent a major step forward, increasing deterrence and offensive power.
The Tayfun missile, in its current SRBM configuration, has a strike range of 300 to 1,000 kilometers. The new hypersonic variant is expected to offer significant improvements in speed, range, and explosive power. While Roketsan has not yet released details on the missile’s performance and payload, experts predict that improvements in maneuverability and the ability to evade defense systems will be notable.
Roketsan, established in 1988, has led Türkiye far in missile technology with products serving the air force, army and navy. The latest achievement with the hypersonic variant of Tayfun SRBM affirms Roketsan's position in developing high-tech weapons, contributing to the country's defense autonomy.
In the context of the global arms race with the participation of powers such as the US, China and Russia, hypersonic missile technology is becoming a factor pursued by many countries, thanks to its ability to overcome modern defense systems. Türkiye joining the club of countries possessing this technology marks an important step forward in its defense strategy, contributing to enhancing the country's position in the Mediterranean, Middle East and neighboring regions.
The successful test of the hypersonic variant of the Tayfun missile not only strengthens Turkey’s defense capabilities but also affirms its growing role in the international defense arena. This is an important step in Turkey’s journey to become a leading military power in the 21st century.
