On the evening of December 3rd, host nation Thailand played their opening match against U22 Timor Leste in Group A of the men's football tournament at the 33rd SEA Games.
The visiting team had the better game in the first half but quickly collapsed against Thailand U22.
Despite not being highly rated, Timor Leste surprised spectators by taking the initiative against the home team. Right after the opening whistle, the visitors pushed forward, played an attacking game, and created many difficulties for the U22 Thailand team.
In fact, U22 Timor Leste even gave Thai football fans a scare when Olagar Xavier's header hit the post in the 12th minute. The visiting players paid a heavy price for failing to capitalize on their opportunities in the first half.
Before the first half ended, Thailand took the lead with a goal from Yotsakorn Burapha with a powerful header. The first half ended with a 1-0 lead for the home team.
In the second half, the nightmare for the visiting team's players officially began. Timor Leste gradually showed signs of fatigue and lost control of the game before Thailand extended their lead to 2-0 thanks to a goal from Siraphop (49th minute).
In the 60th minute, Sanron (Thailand U22) dribbled past Luis Figo on the left wing and delivered a powerful cross into the box. At this point, goalkeeper Rodrigues moved to intercept the Thai pass.
However, due to the powerful pass, the Timor Leste goalkeeper fumbled the ball, allowing it to fly into his own net. Notably, midfielder Luis Figo and goalkeeper Rodrigues had excellent performances in the first half, causing many difficulties for the home team.
Thailand ultimately won 6-1 against Timor Leste. This victory puts the home team temporarily at the top of Group A with 3 points.
