This place impresses with its ancient, romantic beauty, blended with the legendary story of King Dinh Tien Hoang establishing the Altar of Heaven and proclaiming himself emperor.

Thung Ui, a new destination in Ninh Binh .
According to locals, Thung Ui is an ancient valley familiar to the people. In the past, it was a pristine valley, surrounded by towering limestone mountains, lush green forests, and clear lakes. Local people used to come here to hunt, gather, cultivate rice and corn, and collect firewood for their livelihood. But what makes Thung Ui special is not just its picturesque scenery. Its unique value also lies in its historical story connected to King Dinh Tien Hoang.
According to Mr. Truong Dinh Tuong, Chairman of the Ninh Binh Provincial Historical Science Association, the Kinh Thien altar in the ancient capital of Hoa Lu (the current location of Thung Ui) was where Dinh Bo Linh performed a ceremony to worship heaven before leading his army to quell the rebellion of the 12 warlords and unify the country. It was also here, in 968, after pacifying the land and ascending the throne, that the King offered sacrifices to heaven and earth, proclaiming himself Emperor Dinh Tien Hoang, naming the country Dai Co Viet, adopting the reign name Thai Binh, and becoming the first emperor of a centralized feudal state in Vietnam.
As soon as Thung Ui received investment and the construction of cultural facilities recreating the ancient scenery of the former capital region, it immediately became a "hot" destination for the Lunar New Year (Year of the Horse) tourist season. Thung Ui is divided into sections such as the Kính Thiên (Heavenly Mirror) platform, the Kính Địa (Earthly Mirror) platform, the Kính Nhân (Human Mirror) platform, the Kính Thiên (Heavenly Mirror) palace, followed by the Kính Thiên altar.
The landscape at Thung Ui is steeped in traditional architecture, featuring spiritual structures, stilt houses, wooden bridges, and winding stone paths around the lake. Many liken it to a miniature "ancient town" nestled in the mountains, where every corner can become a canvas for artistic photographs. Here, visitors can not only enjoy the picturesque natural scenery but also witness reenactments of ancient rituals, gaining a deeper understanding of the history of this former capital region.
