Swiss President and Defence Minister Viola Amherd announced that she has requested a budget of 4.9 billion francs ($5.5 billion) to strengthen the capabilities of the armed forces in the coming period.
According to Reuters, President Viola Amherd added that by 2035, there will be approximately 20 billion Swiss francs (US$22.58 billion) in additional funding.
Minister Amherd emphasized that this is the first time the country's Parliament has defined a long-term strategic direction for the capabilities of the armed forces. Accordingly, 10 strategic areas have been identified, including leadership and networking; artificial intelligence and integrated sensors; impact against air targets; impact against ground targets; impact in cyberspace and electromagnetic space; logistics, transportation operations, etc.
In addition to purchasing new military equipment and improving communication systems, Switzerland will also build a new data center dedicated to the military and upgrade several bases.
